1.
Establish the norms for collaboration. (What rules will you follow to ensure the meeting remains collaborative?) a.
I would begin the meeting with a calm, positive, and welcoming tone and clearly state the purpose of the meeting and the goal of collaboration between home and school. I would set a few ground rules for the group but would neutrally phrase them and give a reminder to all team members. For example, I would state that the goal is for all members to be active listeners who respect diverse perspectives,
with a unified focus on finding solutions for Selena. I would also present an agenda to the team to help outline the necessary topics and ask each member if any other concerns or issues needed to be covered. If necessary, I would also set a
time limit for specific topics to help keep the conversation moving so that everyone's time is respected and the team can get through the agenda items. 2.
Selena's mom seems reluctant to participate and appears accustomed to the separation paradigm. How will you establish a more collaborative relationship with Selena's mom? (What's the plan to increase collaboration?) a.
I would start by expressing empathy and understanding for Selena's mom's concerns while acknowledging her perspective and the challenges she may be facing. I would also want to reiterate the benefits of a partnership approach to supporting Selena's success at school. I would begin the conversation by sharing Selena's strengths and positive observations seen at school before discussing concerns. I would also focus on providing facts based on data or direct observation, then ask Selena's mom for her input on potential motivators or

strategies to support Selena when addressing her concerns around the school environment.
3.
This teacher seems to be frustrated with Selena and her mother. How will you reframe the
situation using family systems theory? (Figure 4.2) a.
I would explore the family dynamics to learn how they may impact Selena's behavior. I would share how understanding the family context is vital to addressing Selena's challenges and that working together collaboratively can help provide Selena consistency around school expectations and engagement. Understanding the family dynamics can help educators understand the bigger picture, all the moving parts impacting Selena's academic and emotional development. 4.
What is your plan if the situation starts to become negative? a.
Maintaining calm and remaining composed throughout the meeting would be essential, as well as not showing signs of frustration or negativity through tone or body language. It may be necessary to redirect the conversation back to the agenda and goals set at the beginning of the meeting, focusing on Selena's well-
being. Modeling would be a great way to demonstrate to all meeting members what collaboration looks like and how to respect all conversation members despite disagreements. Setting a time limit can help keep the conversation moving
and focused on the facts and topics. Still, taking a short break may also be necessary, and establishing a direction for where the conversation will go when the team reconvenes. 5.
How will you follow up to increase the collaborative nature of the relationship?

a.
I would establish positive communication, ensuring that Selena's mom receives more positive than negative communication, even for the small victories. I would also plan regular follow-ups with Mom and the team to assess Selena's progress. It would also be essential to ask Selena's mom what her preferred method of communication is and focus on using it, showing respect for her time and voice in
Selena's academic progress. I would also make her mom aware of any school activities or events coming up, extending a personal invitation to help her feel wanted and see the value in these activities. 6.
What would you suggest from Chapter Three if Selena's mother asks for help with parenting?
a.
I would suggest Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.), which helps support areas
like active listening, problem ownership, communication and conflict resolution, and family rule-setting and participation (Grant & Ray, 2019)
. This training would help give Selena's mom some strategies and techniques to help support Selena at home and provide opportunities to learn about problem ownership and authentically express feelings without blame (Grant & Ray, 2019)
. The conversations and meetings at school are undoubtedly challenging. If Selena's mom asks for parenting help, P.E.T. would be a great place to start supporting her
as a parent and helping her build the skills needed for positive home and school collaboration.
