The SAMR model is a framework designed to help educators integrate technology into teaching and learning effectively. In this assignment, you will review the four levels of the SAMR model (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition) and review how they are used in the classroom. All explanations and question responses should be answered in full sentences. SAMR Review 1. Define each of the four levels of the SAMR model in your own words. - Substitution: During substitution, the teacher is using technology but there is no change. This assignment can also be done on paper instead of technology - Augmentation: During augmentation, the teacher uses technology similar to substitution but there is a direct change and it benefits the students. - Modification: This can be used as a learning management tool such as Google Classroom, or Canvas. - Redefinition: Redefinition allows teachers to use technology for activities that would otherwise be impossible without technology. 2. Think about a classroom activity you've encountered as a student in the past that involves technology. Identify which level of the SAMR model it falls into and explain why.
Activity: At my old college I had to create a Podcast in my English class SAMR Level: Modification Explanation: This can be used as an additional learning tool because you are presenting information and students are learning from it SAMR Scenarios In this section, you will examine different educational scenarios and determine which SAMR level best suits each scenario. You will then include an explanation as to why you think it fits the level you chose. 3. Scenario 1: A teacher uses a projector to display a PowerPoint presentation with bullet points summarizing the day's lesson. SAMR Level: Substutuion Explanation: The teacher could give the students written notes 4. Scenario 2: A science teacher gives students access to a virtual lab where they can perform virtual experiments online, record data, and receive immediate feedback. The students can then share and review the results of other student’s experiments with everyone who has also completed the same experiments. SAMR Level: Modification Explanation: They are getting hands-on experience and they can share their results with other students in the class 5. Scenario 3: A language arts teacher assigns students to write an essay using a word processing software. Students can collaborate in real-time, provide peer feedback, and access grammar suggestions. SAMR Level: Augmentation Explanation: Students can handwrite the essay but they are able to collaborate with other students 6. Scenario 4: A history teacher has students create a TikTok video as if they were a historical figure that they are studying in class. They share their work with the class and have to option to share it online. SAMR Level: Redefinition Explanation: They can share it online for not just students but also for the community to see
Creating Your Own SAMR Activities 7. Create an educational activity lesson of your own that demonstrates each level of the SAMR model. Provide a brief description of the activity for each level. Substitution: I would give my students a quiz on the computer instead of pen and paper. I would use a software that lets me see the answers Augmentation: I would allow my students to use the internet to research a topic that we are going over in class. They would then need to create a slideshow that they would present to the class Modification: I would allow my students to create a video presentation of what we are learning. They would then publish it to our class dashboard so that other students can view it Redefinition: Allow someone from the outside community to facetime into our class to speak with students rather than having them come all the way to the school SAMR Review Questions Remember to respond to each question in full sentences 8. Why do you think is it important for educators to consider the SAMR model when integrating technology into their teaching practices? I think it is important for educators to integrate technology in the classroom because it can enhance the students learning. It may also help some students understand things that they would not otherwise understand 9. How can moving from one SAMR level to another benefit students' learning experiences? Moving from one level to another may help some students better understand a topic they are learning in class. For example, if they are not understand from a presentation from the teacher, then maybe they can collaborate with students to better understand

10. What are some potential challenges that educators might face when trying to move from one SAMR level to a higher one in their teaching practices? Some educators might face challenges when trying to move to different levels of the model. One major challenge is funding. Some schools may not have the appropriate funds to purchase these resources for students. 11. Looking over your lesson plan you created in the Innovations Lab Lesson Plan activity, which SAMR level would your lesson fit in to and why? I used the pizza lab in my lesson plan. This would be an example of modification because it is giving students hands-on experience in the classroom rather than just learning about how to count money. 12. Now that you know about the SAMR model, what could you do differently with the lesson to move your Innovations Lab Lesson Plan to a different (higher or lower) level of the SAMR model? I could allow the students to work together and practice the activity together
