2. Fat or triglyceride metabolism or digestion.
a. Search online and select an image related to fat metabolism or digestion and cut
and paste. (1 point)
b. From the textbook section “Functions of Fat in the Body” (pages 87-89) write a
summary of what you want to remember about fats and oils and how the body uses
them.
Your summary should be 3-4 sentences. (2 points)
Fat is important to the body because it fuels the body. If all of the fat consumed is
not used for energy, it can be stored to use at a later date, or just to stay there. All
consumed provide 9 calories per gram, which is much more than we receive from
protein. Fat can also be used as a cushion for the body when stored in various
places.
3. Select a topic related to fat or oils that is interesting to you and write a
summary paragraph.
Possible topics include: A health condition or stage of life
and the relationship to fat and oils (example Alzheimers or teens). Focus on a type
of fat/oil- ideas include fish oils or fish oil supplements (omega 3’s), flax oil,
coconut oil, avocado oil, walnut oil, saturated fats, etc. Use your textbook and/or
an on-line resource to guide your paragraph. Reference websites used. You could
also search a research article related to fats and oils and health/disease/condition,
including reference to the research article.
(5 points)
Everyone includes fats and oils into their diets on a daily basis because a lot of
foods we consume throughout the day contain these fats and oils. There are plenty
of different oils to choose from, and some are more beneficial than others and
here’s why. Olive oil, extra virgin in particular, is the best oil for you because of all
of the health benefits that come along with this flavorful oil. Olive oil “is unrefined
and has more nutrients, antioxidants, and heart-healthy fats,” which is what makes
it on the healthier side. A good alternative to olive oil is avocado oil because it has
a lot of the same benefits. Avocado oil has less flavor than olive oil, so if you are
not a huge fan of the taste of olive oil, then avocado oil is the one for you. It
contains a lot of vitamin E, which is a great monounsaturated fat. All in all, both of
these oils are the best for you and either is a good option to incorporate into your
diet.

5. Reflection
: Reflect on fats and oils and your impressions, how you might
want to change your diet, your thoughts in relationship to nursing and
health. (3 points for this section)
I want to improve my diet by cutting out more of the unhealthy fats and
improve my health overall. I want to be able to give my patients
suggestions that I actually follow because it makes it more meaningful to
me. I want to be honest with my patients and I know that everything that
works for me may not work for them, but if I am able to be honest about the
way that I eat and treat me body, I know it will make a difference for myself
and my patients.
