Post a reflection on two to three key points of learning throughout the course.
Throughout this course, I learned how to properly conduct a group session and
understand the needs and treatment programs that would be given to groups and families. Most
importantly, I have gained an understanding of how to be a better practitioner, gained more
aspects of treatment planning and what goes into working with families and groups (Toseland &
Rivas, 2017).
Describe your preferences in terms of working with groups or with families.
My preference in terms of working with groups or families would be that I feel like I can work
better with families since I have done so in my past careers as well as my current ones. I like
having the idea of working with families because you can see everyone’s raw emotions and can
provide that nonbiased judgment of the issues they are facing. Plus, it will also help me develop
my skills and what tools to use with different families in a therapeutic setting.
Describe one strength and one improvement area for each type of social work (group and
family
).
One strength that I feel like I have is my ability to utilize my work experience to be able
to connect with individuals and use different theories such as crisis or resilience theory for
traumatic responses and knowing how to adapt to the client's needs for what they may be
struggling with in families. One improvement that I could work on is developing more skills and
tools to use for a group setting by looking at my evidence-based practices and trying to put those
into place while I’m at my internship.
