Discussion Assignment Unit 1
Several developments and problems have plagued the world. Notably, technology’s
emergence has presented a solution to several of the problems that the world faces, which
has resulted in growth in all realms. Additionally, the expansion has impacted how humans
interact with their ecosystem and the ripple effect is noticeable on the planet’s health.
Everything humans do as individuals collectively impacts their environment and this
explains why they must be aware of how they treat their environment. Individuals should be
intentional regarding their environment’s sustainability and consider themselves as part of
the community, which is the ecosystem and not only superior, and regard other members as
their priorities.
Humans need to learn sustainable ethics, which is defined as an environmental ethic via
which individuals treat and consider the earth as though the available resources are
meager. This ethic presumes that the resources of the earth are not inexhaustible and that
human beings should utilize and conserve available resources in a way that enables their
continued usage in the future. Also, a sustainable ethic presumes that human beings are
part of the ecosystem and that humans suffer when the natural ecosystem’s health is
impaired. Consequently, humans might be unable to establish a sustainable food system
within their nations and communities.
I have already played a part in establishing a sustainable food system in my community
through farming. My idea and that of siblings backing and subscribing to farming when our
mum presented the idea was to safeguard our only land from daunting land grabbers since
the land is being deemed part of the natural environment that we should all protect as we
interact with it. On the way, Zimmerman & Snow (2012) explain the significance of
consuming local produce from the farm with zero packages and free of different toxins and
especially healthier for human beings. My siblings and I expanded on the idea by selling the
produce to local society and encouraging other individuals to join. Additionally, my
grandparents inculcated the home garden habit, which entails growing vegetables, and this
was shared with everybody in the circles. It is worth noting that this has been an enormous
practice to assist us in minimizing junk consumption and bettering our health via healthy
meals and eating.
Other ways that I would employ to begin contributing to establishing a sustainable food
system entail supporting organic and local farmers by buying their goods and produce.
Secondly, I would minimize food wastage by appropriately planning meals, buying just what
is required, and composting scraps of food. Thirdly, I would buy dairy and meat products
from farmers and producers who abide by humane and sustainable practices. Lastly, I
would back initiatives and policies designed to promote sustainable agriculture as well as
lowering pesticide usage.
