Importance of Statistical Concepts
Discuss why it is essential for a person working in health care to understand statistical
concepts. Provide an example of how statistical data is used in your organization or
specialty area today and what you are expected to do with this information as a
practitioner.
Healthcare and statistics are closely linked. No matter what, numbers significantly affect
how patients are treated and how hard things are for them. Usually, medical practitioners use
statistics to determine how to treat patients and the community. Because healthcare is based on
research, these jobs can only be filled with the help of statistics. In this case, it means that there
is some support for giving patients treatments that have been shown to work. Furthermore,
people who work in healthcare must understand statistics to make sense of empirical studies.
Statistics help doctors review previous medical research and determine how well treatment plans
and efforts work
(
Ismail et al., 2020). Hence, the healthcare workers will have a strong
foundation for their research. Not only does knowing statistics help doctors explain new medical
treatments, but it also helps them examine essential data that shows the community's health
status.
Our company uses statistical data to improve how we operate. The cath lab uses statistical
data in several different methods, such as monitoring the incidence of postoperative bleeding and
evaluating the efficacy of closure devices compared to the effectiveness of manually applying
arterial pressure. We compare the proportion of patients who return from surgery with a sheath in
place and need manual pressure to halt the bleeding to those who return from surgery without a
sheath and have problems with postoperative bleeding from closure devices. As per
Jakobsen et
al. (2022), patients treated with an arterial closure device had a much lower risk of bleeding in
3
the groin following surgery. Patients are more likely to report being pleased with their therapy
when it is unnecessary for them to endure uncomfortable applications of physical pressure or to
stay immobile for extended periods. As a nurse who works both before and after operations, it is
my responsibility to keep my doctors informed of potential issues and advise them on the best
possible treatment choices, such as the artery closure device we are using in this particular case.
