Week 1-Check-Up_ Healthcare Investigator
Introduction
Studies have presented varying evidence regarding the safety of drinking wine or any
alcoholic drink during pregnancy. Other studies have shown that red wine is beneficial while
others are against taking any kind of alcoholic drink including red wine during pregnancy. In this
paper, I focus on guiding Claudia, a patient who is 4-months pregnant and has been enjoying two
glasses of red wine each night during her first trimester of pregnancy and want to know if it is
safe.
Claudia, it is essential to consider the potential risks of consuming alcohol while
pregnant. According to the CDC, (2020), there is no safe amount of alcohol, including red wine,
to consume during pregnancy. This is mainly due to the risk of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).
Therefore, this means that whatever amount of red wine or alcoholic content that a woman may
take during pregnancy, the mother and the unborn child might have potential negative impacts.
FAS is as a result of the pregnant mother engaging in an excessive alcohol drinking,
which can cross the placenta and enter the baby's bloodstream. This can lead to a range of
physical and cognitive birth defects that can have long-term effects on the child's development
(Mayo Clinic Staff, 2018). These effects can persist even after the baby is born and as they grow.
According to Mayo Clinic, FAS is dangerous to the child because it might lead to brain damage
while also resulting in growth issues, and such defects have been confirmed to be irreversible
(Mayo Clinic Staff, 2018). As a result, drinking during pregnancy places the child at risk of the
FAS; red wine contains ethyl alcohol or ethanol, a toxin to the body and particularly to the baby
(Nwadike, 2019).
3
The research that drinking some wine each week might not bring any potential harm to
the unborn baby is still inconclusive and this should not be used a basis (Whitfield, 2017).
Drinking red wine can increase the risk of pregnancy loss and long-term harm to the child
(Whitfield, 2017). Therefore, pregnant mothers are advised against taking any kind of alcohol
including wine, this will help to prevent any possible danger that might arise as a result of
alcohol consumptions during pregnancy.
Considering your age and the fact that this is your first pregnancy, it's crucial to prioritize
the well-being of your unborn child. Drinking two glasses of wine every night is not a safe
amount of wine for the fetus. During the initial three months of pregnancy, alcohol can lead to
abnormal facial features in the baby. Furthermore, drinking at any time during the pregnancy,
can cause problems such as low birth weight and social issues (Tackett, 2019). Consuming
alcohol in the amount you have been can potentially increase the risk of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
(FAS) in your growing baby, resulting in various physical and behavioural issues later in life
(Tackett, 2019).
Conclusion
Based on the facts presented, it is strongly recommended that Claudia stop drinking red
wine or any other alcoholic beverages for the remainder of her pregnancy. This is because, the
risks associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy, including the potential for FASDs,
increased miscarriage risk, preterm birth, low birth weight, developmental delays, learning
disabilities, birth defects, and interference with nutrient intake, are significant. Moreover, given
that this is her first pregnancy and she believed herself to be infertile, it is even more crucial to
prioritize their health and well-being.
