[5.2] Deployment Preparation Discussion What is currently being done to prepare our service personnel prior to deployment to a combat zone? Pre-deployment medical and psychological evaluations are conducted by a certified military or contracted professional, to achieve at least a baseline for those are set to deploy, in their current status. This could include questions about family life, support networks, history of past deployments or dilator relief missions that may have affected a soldier previously. Physical training and intelligence of the area is disseminated down to the lowest level of personnel to give a sight picture on the external factors that will come into play. Variables such as common terrain features, weather conditions, culture and important landmarks, wildlife, all fall under the category of a proverbial ‘heads up’ to prevent being caught off guard for all involved, in the form of many, man, MANY briefs and power-point slides. As the class has covered in previous weeks, in regards to having to transform a regular person into one who has the capability to take a life if need be, this prepared is a combination of classical and operant conditions with targets, practicing small-group to large-scale tactical drills (depending on what kind of unit or MOS you are attached at), and visualization exercises that have been honed and adapted over into the military program over the past decades. Back to the internal side, a person must emotionally come to grips that they are going to be away from home and their loved ones for an extended period of time. Additionally, even with modern communication technology, often contacting them back home will be restricted at times, and plain impossible at others, due to a variety of reasons. Therefore, Family Care/Emergency plans are vital to have set up long before the ship date. These ensure your family will be taken care of financially, legal and last will of rights are in order (should you make the ultimate sacrifice), and if you have little ones at home, talk to them most importantly. To them, mommy or daddy will be there the one day and gone the next, often no matter how many time you remind or prepare them. There are also more administrative steps such as receiving notification of mission, then the deployment orders itself, reporting to local duty station, pre-mobilization, final checks, short interim in between (we called it the Christmas Exodus), then off you go.
