Nutrition in Childhood
Question 1
The main assessment tools that would help track Tony’s growth are his Body mass index
(BMI) and growth percentiles. BMI is an effective measure that compares people’s body fat
based on weight and height (
El-Nmer et al., 2014). Therefore, this could be a critical tool in
determining whether Tony has normal body fat or is overweight for his age and height. Besides,
the growth percentiles compare individuals to the accepted normal levels of body weight.
Question 2
Based on the given information, I consider Tony to be overweight. According to his
growth chart, Tony currently lies in the 95
th
percentile implying that he weighs more than 95% of
children his age. Unfortunately, this is not good for his health.
Question 3
On average, Tony needs about 1,800 calories per day. 1800 calories is the appropriate and
recommended daily intake for male nine-year-olds (
El-Nmer et al., 2014). Anything above 1800
would be in excess and likely lead Tony to become overweight. This has been the case with his
increased consumption of junk foods while playing video games.
Question 4
One major factor that may influence Tony’s diet is parental negligence. Tony comes home
from school and starts playing video games. He only takes a break to go and eat dinner.
However, he snacks on a whole bag of chips and soda after school and before dinner. Besides,
his father is not concerned about Tony gaining more weight (
El-Nmer et al., 2014). The lack of
care about what Tony eats after school has led him to adopt a routine where he must consume
potato chips and soda daily. These are high-calorie foods that are gradually increasing his weight.

Question 5
I would recommend Tony stop eating junk foods such as potato chips and soda. In
addition, I would encourage him to take a balanced diet comprising organic foods with fewer
calories to reduce the risk of nutrient deficiency. However, if Tony was in the 3rd percentile, I
would tell him to ensure that he consumes all major nutrient’s in the proper amounts daily. This
could ensure he receives enough of each nutrient
