Scenario 1:
It is Monday 8
th
June, and the time is 10:35 a.m. You are working at Little.ly Early Learning Centre, in the Scarlett Oak room with three other permanent educators. You are working with Sharon who is the Lead Educator. Today, Poppy Jenson, a 12-month old, who attends five days a week has not been herself. She fell asleep for two hours as soon as she arrived and since she has woken up, she has refused water and food. She feels warm to the touch. A few moments later Poppy starts crying and vomits on the floor. Sharon takes Poppy, cleans her up and re-dresses her. Step 1: Questions
1.
Poppy is clearly unwell. What is the first thing you should do?
In my response to this situation, I will record Poppy’s symptoms since she has refused water and
food. She feels warm to the touch and few moments later she started crying and vomits on the
floor. And in order to lessen the chance of the virus spreading, I will isolate her from other
children. And, I’ll let Sharon know who is the lead educator to she can give a heads up on Poppy’s
father for her situation.
Scenario 1 continued…
She is still unsettled and crying and has a raised temperature of 38.7°C
Sharon places Poppy down on the mat next to the basket of toys and Poppy starts to play and interact with them. Within 10 minutes, Poppy vomits again on the floor. 2.
What will you do now that you have established Poppy has a temperature of 38.7 and has vomited again?
With Poppy’s rising temperature, I will give her relief to ease her discomfort, such as giving her
water to stay hydrated, giving her a light blanket to feel chilled, and giving her a sponge bath to
help lower her body temperature. And, before she vomits again, I will tell Sharon to give her dad
a quick call so she can pick Poppy up, or if her dad can’t pick her up, we can bring Poppy to the
nearest clinic.
3.
How will you and the other staff members ensure the health and safety of yourselves and the other children in the room?
To ensure the health and safety of myself, the other children, and the staff in the room, I must clean and disinfect the surfaces. Moreover, incorporating proper handwashing with the children will help minimize the spread of the virus.
Scenario 1 continued…
Poppy’s father Eric is called, he advises he does not want anyone to give her Panadol. He comes and collects Poppy and tells Sharon he will take her straight to the GP. Two hours later Sharon receives a call from Poppy’s dad stating Poppy’s has a stomach flu and is currently contagious and has been for the last 48 hours.

Now that you are aware Poppy is contagious, what information must you provide to Poppy’s father?
Inform Eric that Poppy’s contagious illness might endanger other children and staff in the centre.
Advise him that Poppy should have stayed isolated from other children to reduce the risk of
spreading the contagious illness. And to talk about any indicators of disease or symptoms that
Poppy may having so he can provide care and comfort for Poppy at home, as well emphasizing
good hygiene practice to prevent the spreading of the illness.
5.
What must you do to ensure the health and safety of the other children, families and staff that attend the service?
To ensure the health and safety of the staff, they must know and follow health and safety policies
and procedures. And ensuring the health and safety of the other children in the centre by
incorporating hand washing daily and explaining how important hand washing is in their daily
lives. Moreover, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces in the centre must be done thoroughly to
minimize the risk of spreading the virus.

ENRY
Scenario 2:
It is 9:45 a.m. on Friday 5
th
November. You are working in the Willow Oak room at Little.ly Early Learning Centre. The children are spending the morning in the yard. Two children aged 14 months, Henry Williams and Sara Tan, are playing alongside one another in the sandpit. Henry snatches a plastic spade from Sara. Sara then lets out a scream, leans over and bites Henry on his left forearm. This all happens in a split second, and you do not have time to intervene. Henry cries out in pain and puts his arm up towards you as you walk over, gesturing for you to pick him up. He appears very distressed, crying hysterically. You look at the bite mark on his arm, it did not break through the skin however a small round bruise is appearing. Step 1: Questions
1.
How will you respond to this scenario? Upon seeing Henry cry out in pain and gesturing for me to pick him up, my first response would
be to give him comfort, speak to him softly, and reassuring him that I am there to help him, while
carefully checking Henry’s arm to make sure there are no significant injuries that need to be
treated right away.
Scenario 2: Scenario 2 continued…
You manage to calm Henry down and have applied first aid to the bite mark. You must now call Henry’s mother, Jade Williams, and inform her of the incident. Jade sounds very upset and immediately asks which child bit Henry. 2.
How will you respond to Jade? As I managed to calm Henry down and apply first aid to the bite mark. I would make an incident
report, call Jade right away, and explain to her what happened. “Hi Jade, this is Girlie Carnable
calling from Little. Ly Early Learning Centre. I am calling to give you heads up about an incident
that Henry had earlier today. Henry was bitten by another child, I understand that this may be
upsetting for you but I want to reassure you that everything is well now. Henry has been receiving
attention and we have applied first aid to the bit mark in order to ensure his comfort. The child
who bit Henry was Sara Tan, who was playing with him in the sandpit. We have taken action by
keeping the children apart for this not to happen again.”
3.
What methods could you and your colleagues put in place to avoid this from occurring again?
The three methods that me and my colleagues are in place to avoid this from occurring again are: first, close supervision of the children. Next, provide the children with enough choices to play with so they will not snatch toys from other children. And lastly, promote children to share the toys with
others by taking turns. Integrate games and activities that encourage sharing and interactive play to teach them the value of sharing and taking turns.

VA
Scenario 3: It is 8 a.m. on Thursday 15
th
June. You are working in the Bur Oak room at Little.ly Early Learning Centre today, when regular parent Simone Kerr comes in to drop off Ava Kerr who is 19 months old. Ava normally
attends the service four days a week but has been away for the past three days. Simone tells you that Ava
has been unwell with cold and flu type symptoms but is now feeling a fair bit better and she needs to get back to work. Simone tells you that Ava has been mostly fine through the night, but she’s still been giving her Panadol every four hours and may still be grizzly throughout the day. Her last dose was 8:30 p.m. last night. She says to call you if you think she needs to be picked up and quickly rushes off. Ava begins playing quietly on her own and looks quieter and more withdrawn than normal. You hear Ava cough and it’s thick and chesty and she has a runny nose and what’s coming from it is green. You notify the Room leader and take Ava’s temperature, which reads 38°C.
Step 1: Questions
1.
How will you respond in this situation?
In my response to this situation, I will record Ava’s symptoms since she has been sick with a cold and the flu. Ava starts to play, and I hear her chesty, heavy cough. Her nose is runny and
appears to be green with a body temperature of 38 °C. And in order to lessen the chance of the virus spreading, I will isolate her from other children. In addition, I’ll let the room leader know so she can let Simone know how Ava is doing right now.
Scenario 3 continued…
You take Ava’s temperature for the second time at 8:15 a.m. and it has gone up to 38.2°C. Ava is coughing and appears to be quite miserable. 2.
What will you do now?
With Ava's rising temperature, I will give her relief to ease her discomfort, such as giving her water
to stay hydrated, giving her a light blanket to feel chilled, and giving her a giving her a sponge
bath to help lower her body temperature.
Scenario 3 continued…
You call Simone and she tells you that she would like Ava to be administered Panadol and that she will turn around and come back to the centre and collect her.
Little.ly keeps emergency ‘Panadol Colour free suspension 1–5 years’ in the First Aid cabinet and the dosage for Ava’s age is 7ml. You run through specific details with Simone and then Cheryle, the Lead Educator then confirms this with Simone over the phone. 3.
What must you discuss with Simone in order to gain over the phone consent to administer the medication? What else must you do?
In order to gain over-the-phone consent to administer the medication, I describe Simone Ava’s
symptoms, including fever, chesty and heavy cough, and a runny nose that appears to be green.
And explain to her that giving Panadol can help Ava’s relieve her symptoms and discomfort.
4.
Before administering the Panadol to Ava what must you check?
Before administering Panadol, I make sure that I read the medicine information for any warnings,
directions of use and dosage, active ingredients that a child might be allergic to, and other
CHCECE031 CHILDREN’S HEALTH, SAFETY & WELLBEING ASSESSMENT 2 19
information. Moreover, it is important that someone has to check as witnessed to check the proper
dosage of the medication.
Scenario 3 continued…
Simone arrives to collect Ava at 8:30 a.m. She asks when Ava will be allowed to return as she is worried about having so much time off work.
5.
How will you respond to Simone?
“Hi Simone, I understand you are worried about having so much time off work, but we advise you
to keep Ava home until she feels well and has not shown any symptoms for at least 48 hours.
This is important as we prevent the spread of the virus, and we always prioritize the health and
safety of the children in our care. Please know that we understand your difficulty, as you may
have taken time off from work, and we are here to help you throughout this time.”
6.
What must you do to ensure the health and safety of yourself, the other children and staff in the room?
To ensure the health and safety of myself, the other children, and the staff in the room, I must
clean and disinfect the surfaces. Moreover, incorporating proper handwashing with the children
will help minimize the spread of the virus.
