Informed consent laws in Georgia require healthcare providers to thoroughly educate the patient about certain medical procedures before they are performed. In Georgia, informed consent is governed by Georgia Code § 31-9-6.1, which mandates that patients must be informed/educated and give their consent before undergoing certain types of procedures (surgical procedures under general, spinal, or major regional anesthesia, amniocentesis, and diagnostic procedure using injected contrast materials). Prior to surgery, patients must be informed of the diagnosis requiring the procedure, purpose of the procedure, risks involved, likelihood of success, alternatives to the procedure (if any), and what would happen if the surgery was not performed. Informed consent can be conducted in written form, audio-visual materials, or direct conversation with authorized healthcare personnel. For the consent to be legal and valid, it must be documented in writing and signed by the patient or an authorized person.
