COMMUNITY INTERVENTION CASE SCENARIO 1 Community Intervention Case Scenario Sydni Macomber College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Grand Canyon University BHS-440 Understanding Trauma Lyndz Gruelle April 28, 2024
COMMUNITY INTERVENTION CASE SCENARIO 2 Community Intervention Case Scenario Roles of the Behavioral Health Professionals The amount of mental health specialists required for a school following a loss varies depending on a number of variables, such as the school's size, the extent of the loss, and the unique requirements of the staff, faculty, and students. The program would try to allow for 2-3 counselors and behavioral professionals in order to aid in the navigation of the loss of the instructor. Additionally, the program may find an individual who has experience with military trauma counseling specifically for the service member instructor. In a school that has suffered a loss, school counselors, grief counselors, and crisis intervention specialists may be among the roles and needs of behavioral health professionals. Crisis intervention specialists offer prompt crisis intervention and assistance to staff, faculty, and students who are in severe distress after a loss. In order to assist people in processing their feelings and adjusting to bereavement, they might also offer individual and group crisis counseling sessions. Lastly, crisis intervention specialists can help with organizing crisis response initiatives and communicating with outside support services when necessary, such as additional counseling for the service member if necessary. School counselors can provide grief counseling and emotional regulation techniques, as well as ongoing counseling and support, to students who have experienced a loss such as this. The school counselor can play a significant role in supporting students as they grieve and deal with the effects of the loss on their personal and academic lives by offering advice and resources. Along with working with educators and administrators, the counselor can also help identify struggling students and create effective intervention plans (Frey, et al., 2022).
COMMUNITY INTERVENTION CASE SCENARIO 3 Ultimately, the main objective of behavioral health specialists in a school that has suffered a loss is to offer staff, faculty, and students all-encompassing support during the grieving process as they strive for resilience and healing. These professionals are essential in helping the school community heal from a loss and create a safe, supportive environment by attending to its emotional, psychological, and social needs (Frey, et al., 2022). Intervention Plan A structured intervention identified as Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) is designed to address the psychological consequences from traumatic events soon after they happen. To assist people in processing their experiences and lower the possibility of long-term trauma effects. The initial step would be outlining the goal of the debriefing and creating a secure and encouraging atmosphere. All participants would be informed that communication is confidential in all forms and that candid sharing of ideas and emotions is encouraged. Secondly, it would be encouraged for all participants, both teachers and students alike, to narrate the specifics of the traumatic event they are experiencing with the loss of their instructor and coworker. Next, there will also be time allowed for the participants to share their own thoughts and beliefs surrounding their loss. This may also be a time to negate any irrational thoughts and fears they may have, if any, to alleviate any unnecessary stress. It may be important to discuss realistic expectations and probable outcomes to give a sense of control to those who may feel a lack thereof surrounding the loss. Additionally, discussions among the participants would focus on the participants' emotional and physical responses to the loss. Allowing the participants to have a better understanding of their emotions and reactions can be very beneficial in coping with the event, while introducing additional coping mechanisms that may help for long term coping, that will be

COMMUNITY INTERVENTION CASE SCENARIO 4 introduced in a later step as well. Furthermore, gauging the participants' stress reactions can allow for further education on how to manage those reactions. Transparency amongst the potential short-term effects of trauma, such as intrusive thoughts, nightmares, difficulties, sleeping, and more, as well as coping mechanisms, can make these occurrences more manageable amongst the participants should they occur. Meditation, breathing exercises, and grounding techniques are a few suggestions on how to alleviate anxiety surrounding a traumatic event such as the loss of an instructor or coworker. Accentuating the importance of self-care following a traumatic event can urge participants to give their physical and mental health top priority. Finally, the participants' return to their regular lives and activities can prove to be one of the most difficult aspects of coping with a traumatic event. In addition to offering support for any difficulties that may arise during this process, the participants would be encouraged to devise a plan for going back to work or school following the loss of the instructor (Banks, M. B., 2023). Following these guidelines can allow for more long-term resilience regarding the experience of trauma. Outside Resources One resource that may be utilized is the Midland Care Center for Hope and Healing. This organization provides many avenues of support. These services include opportunities for expressive therapies, youth camps, potlucks, memorials, family evenings, adult support groups, and individual grief and loss counseling for all ages. Additionally, schools, workplaces, faith communities, and other organizations can access mobile grief support. This resource may be very beneficial to this specific case as the mobile grief support can come to the school directly without parents and teachers having to find time for this support. Supporting individuals who have experienced a loss in realizing that grief is a normal and even healthy response to loss is the

Individuals, couples, and families can receive professional counseling and mental health therapy at the New Life CityCare Counseling Center. These therapists are highly skilled and qualified counselors who offer practical tools and techniques to help people deal with a variety of challenges, including anxiety and fear, bereavement and loss, crisis and trauma, and more. There are two Provisional Licensed Mental Health Practitioners, one being a man and one being a woman, that way those who may feel more comfortable with one or the other may have their choice. Additionally, those who may desire a more religious approach to coping may benefit more from this resource ( New Life Church., 2024) . Private and Military Responses Over the past 40 years, there has been a significant evolution in both private and military responses to trauma. This evolution has been fueled by advancements in psychological research, societal understanding, and organizational attitudes toward mental health. The military has frequently responded to trauma in a more structured way, implementing standardized programs like Combat and Operational Stress Control, COSC, and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, CISD, to address traumatic experiences. In an effort to lower barriers to help-seeking, military units frequently have embedded mental health professionals who offer support and counseling to service members right within their units. The military has placed more of an emphasis on resilience training, with initiatives aimed at enhancing psychological toughness and coping mechanisms to better equip service members for deployment and combat stress. The likelihood of long-term impairment can be further reduced and the patient can return to the highest level of
COMMUNITY INTERVENTION CASE SCENARIO 6 function by promptly transferring to rehabilitation programs, both inpatient or outpatient. Conducting an assessment of rehabilitation needs is crucial for every trauma system to ascertain the quantity, kind, and caliber of services needed and accessible in the area. To make sure that rehabilitation-related concerns are incorporated, rehabilitation specialists would need to take the initiative (Berwick, D., 2016). The military's views toward mental health have changed significantly over the past 40 years, with a growing understanding of the significance of treating trauma and lowering stigma within the ranks. Psychiatric research-based evidence-based practices have become more prevalent in military trauma responses, replacing antiquated methods such as CISD with more successful interventions. Furthermore, post-deployment care and reintegrating service members into civilian life have received more attention. Comprehensive programs that address the psychological difficulties of reintegration have been developed for these individuals. All things considered, over the past forty years, both the military and the private sector have changed in how they respond to trauma, but efforts to increase treatment accessibility, lessen stigma, and improve the efficacy of interventions for trauma survivors continue (Berwick, D., 2016). Concluding Statement Through a plethora of resources, counselors, coping mechanisms, and more, the community intervention program can aid in the navigation of grief amongst the students and teachers affected by the loss of the instructor. Utilizing the resources provided can ensure that every need is met, whether those needs be that of a child, adult, or service member. Given the uniqueness of grief from each individual, it is essential there are a multitude of resources at their disposal.
