Mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
Part I
Overall, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's mission statement effectively communicates the organization's goal of advancing cures and prevention methods for pediatric catastrophic diseases through
research and treatment, while also ensuring that no child is denied treatment because of their race, religion, or family's ability to pay. The mission meets the SMART criteria, as it is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time constrained (Vision, Mission, and Goals, 2012). The main downside is that it
is unclear when the task will be accomplished. However, this is understandable given the continued commitment to find cures and save children (About us, n.d.).
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's mission statement exemplifies a purpose statement that is both clear and effective (About us, n.d.). "Through research and treatment, to make progress toward finding treatments and ways to prevent catastrophic diseases that affect children" (About us, n.d.). No child is turned away from treatment because of their race, religion, or their family's ability to pay, as this was our founder Danny Thomas's goal when he founded the organization ", effectively conveys the organization's mission, which is to discover treatments for life-threatening childhood illnesses as well as ways to prevent
them, and to ensure that all children, regardless of socioeconomic status or other factors, have access to these therapies (Danny Thomas, n.d.).
One of the most significant advantages of the mission statement is its SMART compliance. The mission statement details the organization's aims and the activities required to achieve those goals, making it a very specific document. It is measurable in the sense that the aim can be quantified, since medicines developed at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital have helped to raise the overall children cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since the hospital's inception. This is clear evidence that the group has succeeded in its purpose (Favuzza, 2018).
The mission can also be realized because the organization can support its mission and vision by providing
free cancer treatments, nutrition, shelter, and post-cancer care to children and their families (Favuzza, 2018). This enables the organization to realize its mission and objectives. At St. Jude, patients' families are never required to pay for treatments or services that are not covered by their insurance (Favuzza, 2018). St. Jude is the sole pediatric cancer research facility of its sort. This is an important component of
the goal because it ensures that no child is denied care because his or her family cannot afford it (Favuzza,
2018).
The mission is feasible because St. Jude's accomplishments are achievable. The emphasis on finding therapies and rescuing young kids has resulted in the formation of a prestigious organization that has assisted numerous families throughout the world in saving their children's lives. The organization's reputation and track record of accomplishments demonstrate that the mission is not just doable, but also realistically attainable (Foy, et al, 2020).
One disadvantage of the mission statement is the lack of a time constraint. The mission does not guarantee a reliable completion date. This is perfectly understandable, considering the never-ending burden of finding therapies and preserving children's lives. The foundation has set a target for the next six
years: 75 percent of its overall efforts will be directed toward boosting cure rates for pediatric cancer, with 25 percent going toward non-malignant hematological disorders and certain infectious diseases (Favuzza, 2018). This goal was set because the organization intends to continue directing 75 percent of its
overall efforts toward increasing cure rates for pediatric cancer (Favuzza, 2018).
Overall, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's mission statement is effective because it clearly communicates the organization's goal of advancing cures and prevention methods for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment, while also ensuring that no child is denied treatment
because of their race, religion, or family's ability to pay. Furthermore, the mission statement guarantees that no kid is denied care because of a family's ability to pay. The mission's objectives were met because they were explicit, measurable, attainable, practical, and time bound. The only issue is that it is uncertain when the job will be completed, which is the one disadvantage. This is perfectly understandable, considering the never-ending burden of finding therapies and preserving children's lives.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has a mission statement as well as a powerful vision statement: "A world without childhood cancer." This organization's long-term goal is defined clearly and concisely in a vision statement that is successful despite its seeming simplicity. The vision statement, like the mission statement, is focused on finding therapies for childhood cancer and working toward a world free of this sickness.
In conclusion, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's mission and vision statements are useful tools for communicating the organization's goals and priorities in an understandable manner. The organization's mission is to improve cures and prevention methods for children’s catastrophic diseases through research and therapy, while ensuring that no kid is denied treatment due to their background. The mission statement meets the SMART criteria and effectively communicates the organization's purpose of achieving these goals. Part II
Objective 1. Create an atmosphere and culture that is motivating and supportive of patients and their families, and work to improve their overall experience.
Objective 2. Create extraordinary possibilities for teaching, learning, and research to improve the quality of care provided to our patient group.
Objective 3. Quicken the pace at which changes are made to clinical care by providing outcomes-
oriented, individualized care in the domain of programs that are focused on pediatric malignancies.
The company's three key strategic goals are to improve the experiences of both patients and their families,
to improve the care delivered to our patient population, and to accelerate the process of clinical care improvement. I believe the corporation can improve in all these areas, and that doing so will benefit the business. As a result, I have decided to focus my efforts on the objectives outlined above.
It is critical to improve the experience of both patients and their families since doing so will create a more
positive environment for patients and their families, resulting in better medical care (Vision, Mission, and Goals, 2012). Improving the care provided to our patient population is critical because it ensures that patients receive the best therapy possible and have access to the most recent findings in both treatment and research. It is critical to accelerate the process of enhancing clinical care since it will improve the degree of medical attention provided to patients while also allowing the organization to run more efficiently (Foy, 2020).
These objectives will be achievable, and the firm will benefit from the results. To achieve these objectives, the company will need to demonstrate dedication, which will take time (Foy, 2020). I believe that if the organization can focus on these goals and make them a high priority, they will be able to improve the quality of care delivered to our patient population, improve the overall patient experience, and accelerate the process of implementing clinical care improvements.
