1 Lab 4 Assignment: Relative Age
Background Relative age defines the time sequence in which events occur. Learning to interpret relative age relationships is extremely important in all aspects of geology. Materials •
6 books or DVDs •
Post-its or tape for labeling Instructions For this assignment, you will use stacks of books or DVDs to simulate rocks which have been deposited in layers. You will answer several questions based on different arrangements of the stack. Assignment Submission You will submit a Word document as an attachment to the assignment. The Word document will contain your answers to the questions on page 2. Record your answers on a separate document. Remember to number your answers. To begin
, create labels and affix to your ‘rocks’
. •
Rock names = sandstone, conglomerate, shale, lava flow, limestone, and siltstone. Next, arrange your rocks in a stack, like the one below, and number the layers from 1 to 6 (
with 1 being the oldest and 6 being the youngest
). Record the numbers on the labels next to the rock name.
Number Rock name
siltstone limestone lava flow shale conglomerate sandstone
2 Answer the following questions: 1.
List the rock layers in order from oldest to youngest according to the “Principle of superposition”? 2.
In your stack, the “lava flow” is younger than the “conglomerate”. Is this the only possible age relationship, or is it geologically possible that the “lava flow” could be older than the “conglomerate”? Why? Hint: Think about what can happen to rocks when they become deformed. 3.
Assume that the relative ages in your first arrangement are correct. Put the “lava flow” beneath the “conglomerate”. Is this relationship geologically possible? (a younger lava flow below an older conglomerate)? Why or why not? The stack should look like this: Number Rock name
siltstone limestone shale conglomerate lava flow sandstone 4.
Assume that the original relative ages are correct (1 is oldest, 6 is youngest). If you arrange the stack like this: Number Rock name
lava flow sandstone siltstone limestone shale conglomerate Assume that no faulting or folding took place. Is this relationship geologically possible? (The older lava flow being on top of the younger siltstone and limestone). Why or why not?
