Name: Justice Avant-Noble Date: 07-08-2023 Instructor’s Name: Leah Willis Assignment: SCI203 Groundwater Sustainability Lab Title: The Effect of Human Development on Groundwater Sustainability Instructions: In Part I of this form, record the data from the Unit 2 Lab: Groundwater Sustainability. In Part II, follow the steps of the scientific method listed below to complete this lab report form. When this form is complete, please submit it in the submission area of the classroom. Part I: Using the time progression of industrialization and human development, fill in the data table. You will use this information to complete your lab report in Part II. Time Period Impact to Forest Groundwater Levels Saltwater Intrusion Farming Industrial development Population 1800s Bigger forest Plenty of ground water no salt water presence Small farms No cities Limited housing 1900s Decreased 50% Decreased 50% Ocean water salt present Bigger farms but they are fewer City and industrial growth development Increase in housing 2000s Decreased by 90% Decreased by 90% Increased movement of ocean water into ground water Same number of farms but size decreased 20% Decreased industrial development by 10-15% 20% decrease in housing development Part II: Write a lab report using scientific method sections below: Title: The Effect of Human Development on Groundwater Sustainability Purpose o In 2-3 sentences , state the purpose of the Groundwater Sustainability Lab. The purpose of groundwater sustainability lab is to track human and industrial impact of sustainability of groundwater by analyzing the information collected. This information can be used to track the ratio of population to resources. Introduction
o In a detailed paragraph , summarize what is currently known about the impact of human development on groundwater sustainability. Use the background information provided in the Unit 2 Lab: Groundwater Sustainability. The impact of human development on groundwater sustainability dates to the 1800s where a lot of civilizations were underdeveloped, and the groundwater was in plenty even though only 1% of the earths water is accessible and useful for sustaining human life. The 99% of the water that is not accessible is in underground aquafers and is considered nonrenewable. By the 1900s the environment had become more developed and thus causing more resources to lead to revolutionizing the industrial industries. The underground aquafers are being used faster than they can be replenished due to human consumption through irrigation and drinking water. Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome o In one sentence , state what you expect the results of the lab procedure will be. I expect the lab results to show the latest amount of available underground water. Methods o In a detailed paragraph , summarize the steps you performed to collect the data in this lab exercise. The goal of the methods section is to include enough information that others can duplicate your process and obtain the same results. The steps I took to collect the data was first to identify the time frames I wanted use 1800s,1900s, 2000s. I then selected the categories I wanted to analyze farming, groundwater, population, industrial development, saltwater intrusion, impact on forest. I then analyzed each one and gathered research that supported my hypothesis. Lastly, I compared the data of all the centuries used. Results/Outcome o In a detailed paragraph , summarize your data. The data showed that through population growth our water resources have decreased drastically since the 1900s and 1800s. It showed that while regions were developing things were fine in the 1800s because access to water was limited but as the industrial revolution began it made access a lot easier which cause a lot of migration to cities causing more water from the ground water aquafers to be used. More people mean more food to grow, and more water needed to grow that food. Discussion/Analysis o In a detailed paragraph , discuss whether you obtained the expected results and what you learned from the lab. The lab did show me the results I expected to find which was tat over time the water from the aquafers has depleted drastically.
