Chemistry of Sea Water
Questions to Answer 1. (10 points) Measure the temperature (°C) and oxygen concentration of a water mass with ice (A) and a water mass at room temperature (B).

A
6.9 C 7.1 mg/L
B
21.2 C 5.9 mg/L
2. (10 points) What would be the density of water mass A and water mass B with different salinities? Use the temperature of each water mass and Figure 1.
a. if salinity = 0 water mass: A - 0.5 water mass B -2_____
b. if salinity = 35 water mass: A 27 water mass B _28____
3. (10 points) Explain the difference in oxygen concentration of the two water masses.
The difference in temperature affects the oxygen concentration 4. (15 points) a) In which region (polar, mid-latitude, tropical) do you find the lowest dissolved oxygen values at the sea surface? Use the World Ocean Atlas https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/world-ocean-atlas-
2018f/ for the analysis (see WOA18 Figures). Select Dissolved Oxygen
, make sure surface is selected and click show figure
.
The lower dissolved oxygen is found at the tropical region. b) (15 points) Explain your answer.
The temperature, high biological activity, and limited mixing all play a part is the tropical regions low amount of dissolved oxygen. 1
5. (15 points) a) At 3000 m depth, in which ocean and hemisphere do you find the lowest dissolved oxygen
values? Use the World Ocean Atlas at https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/world-ocean-atlas-2018f/ the analysis (see WOA18 Figures). Select Dissolved Oxygen
, make sure 3000 m is selected and click show figure
.
Lower dissolved oxygen at the depth of 3000 meter is found in the north Pacific Ocean in the northern hemisphere. b) (15 points) Explain why this region has the lowest dissolved oxygen concentration?
This region has the lowest dissolved oxygen at the 3000-meter depth due to upwelling, bacterial decomposition, limited mixing, and high biological productivity 6. (10 points) Explain why the oxygen minimum layer occurs at the depth that it does and why dissolved oxygen increases with depth below that layer.
The oxygen minimum layer occurs at the depths between 100 and 1500 meters because oxygen dissolves easily in cool water, and the minimum layer is rather warm. This is why colder deeper water has a higher oxygen content than the warmer water in the oxygen minimum zone. In addition, the thermocline can act as a barrier to maxing between the surface and deeper layers. 2
