GEOL 1100 500 The Rock Cycle Directions: Using your knowledge of rock types and the processes that form and change them, draw a simple rock cycle in the space below, starting with MAGMA at the TOP. Label each rock/material and place labeled directional (process) arrows between each rock type to show how they can change from one type into another. Recall that some processes can be shown between more than one pair of rock types. You will find your previous rock labs helpful. You may use any other source but you must give a citation(s) and you may not just copy one that you find on the internet. This diagram may be drawn and written by hand or using a digital drawing program. It may be in color or black and white, simple or elaborate. You will be graded on content and well as neatness and readability. When you have completed your diagram, answer the questions on the following page in complete sentences. 1

Rock Cycle Questions: 1. Explain one way in which a metamorphic rock could become a sedimentary rock. A metamorphic rock can become a sedimentary rock when the metamorphic rock could be uplifted and eroded to form a new sediment and later a sedimentary rock without melting. 2. Which type of rock forms only from the solidification of magma? Igneous rocks 3. After rocks are changed by the processes of weathering and erosion what do they become? Sediments – brokens pieces of the rock 4. Describe the shortest path for an igneous rock to become a metamorphic rock. Metamorphism. 5. What are the three ways that a sedimentary rock can be changed and what is the result of each change? One way is heat and pressure which will turn the sedimentary rock into a metamorphic rock. Another is melting which will become magma and then cool into an igneous rock. Lastly is weathering and erosion which will break down the rock into small pieces becoming a sediment. 6. Explain the process that must take place for an igneous rock to become a sedimentary rock. For an igneous rock to become a sedimentary rock weathering and erosion must break down the igneous rock, becoming sediments. The fragments are carried away through wind, ice, gravity, or water. The sediments will be buried and the accumulated sediment become compacted and cemented together creating a sedimentary rock. 7. What type of rock is always formed when another type of rock undergoes heat and pressure? Metamorphic rock. 3

8. Below are pictures of three different rocks. To the best of your ability, decide what type each is, and place its letter on your chart in the correct location. Bonus: name the rocks. All of these images are from R. Weller, Cochise College . You can drag and resize them in order to get a closer look. A B C 4
A is an sedimentary rock. It is a biochemical sedimentary rock and is fossiliferous limestone. B is a metamorphic rock. It is either quartzite or marble. C is an igneous rock. Due to the very coarse texture a pegmatite. This worksheet have been modified by a worksheet presented by Emily Cooke on TeachersPayTeachers. Instructor’s Grading Rubric: Superior Developing Lacking Rock Cycle Diagram All materials (rocks and other) are included. Magma is at the top. All pathways are included and correctly labeled. Overall arrangement makes logical sense. 15-13 points Some errors or omissions, and/or indication that instructions were not followed. 12-8 points Incomplete and/or there are multiple errors. 0-7 points Questions Mostly correct answers. Unknown samples are placed correctly on the rock cycle diagram. 15-13 points Some errors or omissions, and/or indication that instructions were not followed. 12-8 points Incomplete and/or there are multiple errors. 0-7 points TOTAL: /30 5
