Lab 7 - Earth Materials Activity
Part 1 (3 pts)
Consult Lab 7 Earth Materials in the online lab manual. Use the decision tree (Figure 7.5 on page
134) and tables 7.4 – 7.7 (pages 135-136) to correctly identify the minerals (Samples 1-10) listed
in the UnknownMinerals.pdf file.
To solve each sample, use the following strategies:
1.
Use the decision tree (Fig. 7.5 p. 134 in lab manual). Determine if the mineral is metallic
or non-metallic.
If non-metallic, determine if light or dark in color.
2.
Next, based on your determinations, pick the appropriate table 7.4 - 7.7.
Determine the
minerals using their specific luster, hardness, shape, color, and streak parameters.
3.
All of the possible 20 mineral candidates are listed in Table 7.7 on page 136. If you
suspect you have a correct answer, you can look up a picture of that mineral to help
confirm.
You must show some data collection for the minerals in the table below. To get the 0.3 points for
each mineral, you must correctly ID the mineral and list at least 2 pieces of data (luster, color,
hardness, crystal faces, diagnostic features, etc.) for each mineral.

Part 2 (1 pt)
Read the Robert Hazen's article “Mineral Fodder” and right a brief reflection (150-250 words)
in
your own words
about the scientific significance of minerals on Earth and in the solar system.
Your answer should clearly demonstrate that you read the entire article and grasped its basic
thesis. It should address one or all of the following questions:
1. How do minerals and biological life interact?
2. What is the significance of the Great Oxidation Event?
3. How do minerals demonstrate linkages between different domains or disciplines of science?
