Part 1
1.
What types of boundaries are most likely to contribute to (a) compression, (b) extension
and (c) shearing?
Convergent plate boundaries contribute to compression, divergent boundaries to extension and
transform boundaries to shearing.
2.
Explain why fractures are common in volcanic rocks.
The rapid cooling of volcanic rocks at the surface can easily cause fracturing due to the
subsequent volume loss.
3.
What type of fault would you expect to see near a transform plate boundary?
Why?
You would expect to see a strike-slip fault at a transform plate boundary because there is
horizontal motion along the fault.
Part 2
1.
How would you respond to experiencing a large earthquake?
If I were to experience an earthquake, I think I would be confused at first. From videos I have
seen online people tend to freeze up confused when the shaking first starts. After I realize what is
happening, I would follow the protocols for earthquakes that I learned in school. I would find a
strong table or stand in an area where I can avoid any objects that can fall on me. After the
shaking stops, I would try to contact family members to ensure they were okay and then prepare
for aftershocks.
Well, many of us have. If you were in Maryland on 8/23/2011 you probably felt the results of the
earthquake that occurred outside of Mineral, Virginia, even if you did not know what was
happening.
To start our study of this event, you may want to start with this podcast.

Read the report and record 10 geological facts that you find interesting. Submit your document to
the assignment fold
Occurrence of earthquakes are lower in central and eastern U.S. than in the western U.S.
The region where the earthquake took place had low-level seismicity since at least 1774
before that day.
Chesapeake Bay had increased levels of seismic activity.
“The earthquake had a 3-part rupture”
“Groundwater level changes (most <15 cm) were recorded at 48 wells as far as 550km
from the epicenter”
“Small sand boils identified near the epicenter caused by strong shaking”
The rocks on the east coast are older and denser so seismic waves can travel through
them easier.
Near the epicenter had not one but two faults that created a fault crossroad.
“The seismic waves were focused along a northeasterly trend parallel to (and probably
somewhat guided by) the Appalachian geologic structure”
Based on images taken the fault is relatively new.
