Instructions Part 1 1. What is the evidence for mantle convection, and what is the mechanism that causes it? The main evidence of mantle convection is the rate at which the temperature increases within the mantle. The mechanism that causes it is the heat transfer from the core to the mantle. 2. Where and how is Earth’s magnetic field generated? The Earth’s magnetic field is generated in the outer core. It is generated by heat transferring from the solid inner core to the liquid outer core. Electrical current flowing in the liquid iron of the outer core is responsible for creating the magnetic field. 3. What property of the mantle is essential for the isostatic relationship between the crust and the mantle? The ‘plastic’ nature of the mantle is the property that is essential for the isostatic relationship between the crust and the mantle. Part 2 We often think of earthquakes as something people in California deal with but do they happen in Maryland? That is what we are going to find out. You can start by reading the information page at http://www.mgs.md.gov/geology/geohazards/earthquakes_and_maryland.html Answer the following questions and submit your answers in the assignment. 1. How many earthquakes have occurred during the time you have lived in Maryland? 28 earthquakes have occurred since I have lived in Maryland. I moved to Maryland in 2019. 2. The most recent earthquake was located Sykesville Maryland on October 12,2022. 4. When and where was the largest earthquake that had an epicenter in Maryland? The largest earthquake with an epicenter in Maryland was in Barnesville on July 16, 2010(3.6 magnitude). While the epicenter was not located in Maryland the largest
earthquake felt throughout Maryland had its epicenter in Mineral Virginia on August 23, 2011 (5.8 magnitude)
