Exercise 3, part B:
Now that you have already carefully reviewed the video presentation, consider the following questions
regarding how you might enhance or customize your own 72-hour kit and how this kit might need to
change as you move to a new location over the course of your life.
Please be sure that your responses
are complete and that you take the time to fully explain/justify your decisions and opinions.
Additionally, please make sure that you avoid bullet points and any serious grammatical mistakes.
Short-answer essay questions for more in-depth consideration of video (each is worth 10 points)
1. Carefully think about the items discussed as part of the 72-hour kit presented in this video.
Identify
THREE additional items that you would recommend adding to the 72-hour kit presented by Dr. Judkins
and Dr. Bonde.
Please explain why each would be a justifiable addition to the 72-hour kit.
Recall that
the items would need to fit into the backpack displayed.
Hint: If you get stuck, think about some items
that Dr. Judkins might need but does not currently have packed given the family situation he describes.
Life Straw would be an essential tool to purify any form of water that is around you. Even sources of
water that is too small to fit an entire water bottle in, you will be able to have clean, purified from a
small, compact straw. Solar panel charger for your cell phone, if you are stuck somewhere for a long
period of time and are still unable to get ahold of someone to rescue you, you will still be able to have
your phone for when help does come. Water proof case for your phone as well in case you are in a
setting that involves water, you will be able to use your phone after to getting to safe land. Flare gun
would be such an important item because you will be able to make your location known to someone in a
far range and grab someone’s attention that you are in need of help. Help will be able to spot the flare
from miles away and point help in the correct direction.
2. Consider how a 72-hour kit might be different depending on the geography of where one lives.
For
this question, identify FOUR specific items that would vary if you prepared a 72-hour kit for your home in
Detroit, Michigan verses your vacation home in Miami, Florida.
Please be sure to fully explain why these
items would be necessary in one location and not the other, or how they might need to be altered for
each location.
Hint: Consider all aspects of the geography of each location and the types of hazards that
might be experienced.
A snow jacket, beanie, scarf and hot hands to warm your hands and feet in the frigid temperatures in
Michigan. You wouldn’t need to bring those two items to Florida because the temperatures are relatively
warm in Miami and you would be extremely warm. A snow jacket is necessary for the 72-hour kit in
Michigan because not only are the temperatures low, but the chances of snow are pretty high as well.
Staying as warm as possible if you are stranded outside, would help decrease the possibility of frostbite.
In the 72-kit for Florida, I would include a hat, sunscreen, extra water bottles and a raincoat. The
weather in Florida is mainly sunny and hot, so being as protected as possible would be ideal. The
weather also changes frequently and could have a rainstorm out of the blue. In the case that this does
occur, having a raincoat would help you stay dry as opposed to Michigan where it would most likely be
snowing.
