The Unique Properties of Water Life on Earth depends critically on water, which is frequently referred to as the "universal solvent". We'll examine the science behind the special qualities of water that make it essential for a variety of biological processes in this lecture.
Science Concepts Involved Cohesion and Adhesion: Hydrogen bonds between water molecules cause them to be attracted to one another (cohesion). The adhesion feature of water which is also a result of this phenomenon allows water to stick to other things. This explains why water droplets can condense into beads on some materials. Evidence of cohesion and adhesion in a water droplets High Heat Absorption: Heat is easily absorbed by water without significantly changing its temperature. This characteristic is essential for controlling the climate on Earth. Ice Formation and Density: Unlike other substances, water has a difference in density between its liquid and solid states (ice). Ice floats in water due to this reason. This characteristic guarantees that aquatic life can endure freezing temperatures since ice formation on the surface insulates the water below.

Applications of Daily Life Temperature Regulation: Oceans and large water bodies absorb heat during the day and release it at night, helping to regulate climate and temperatures. Transport System in Plants: Capillarity is due to the adhesive and cohesive forces of water. This allows plants to transport water from their roots to their leaves. Recreation: Properties like buoyancy (due to density differences) make water-based activities like swimming and boating possible. 3. Sources: Smith, J. (2019). The Essential Properties of Water .
