Point-form Critique Worksheet SCM 2210/ABIZ 2210 Critique article name: Impacts of high-speed rail on airlines, airports, and regional economies: A survey of recent research Abstract The authors of the paper review the studies previously done on the impacts of air-HSC competition on airlines, with a particular focus on the overall effects of parallel HSR services on passengers’ mode of choice, as well as on airlines’ flight frequencies, traffic volumes, airfares, and market power. The authors provide an extensive discussion on the impact of HSR speed that related to not only trave; time (given a fixed distance) but also safety concerns. The paper continues to summarize theoretical and empirical findings on the impacts of HSR on airports. Two main insights are highlighted; first that HSR can have a traffic redistribution effect on airport traffic. Second, that to mitigate congestion at primary hub airports, policy makers can consider diverting some traffic to regional airports by promoting air-HSR intermodal services. Paper’s strengths The paper has good background information about the topic of the paper: high speed rail (HSR), it introduces its history and growth over the years and how its development expanded from Asian countries like Japan to European countries such as France and Spain. The paper provides interesting statistics regarding the impacts HSR has on the airlines, for instance, it showcases by how much percentages the airlines demand has been reduced. The paper provides short summaries of the studies that they have introduced and provides an overall conclusion and the findings from the surveys and studies. Opportunities for Improvement The introduction of the paper is very long; it does not clearly state what the paper will introduce or what exactly the purpose of the paper is. It is very confusing for the reader. The paper’s layout and the format are not very pleasant to read. It has too many words, they are all congested together, without proper separation of the parts and subheadings. The paper does not illustrate many figures, it only contains 1 figure. The table presented is also very congested, with too many wordings, and without a clear statement of the relevance of the table to this paper overall. No proper conclusion or summary of the paper is presented, the ending statements are very long, it does not state a clear message and the summary of the paper. The paper overall was very confusing to read, the point of the paper was not clearly stated or understood. The content of the paper seemed very repetitive at times. What did you learn? The paper didn’t seem to introduce a lot of knowledgeable content, what I learnt from this paper is that the introduction and the entrance of HSR in countries can impact the airlines’ flight frequency, demand, and airfares. I learnt that HSR’s entrance in the market has more detrimental impacts on domestic flights but very insignificant impact on international flights, especially for large airports with high demands.
