Assignment #2: International Product Development Case Study Sweden Context & Branding Sweden is famous for its natural forests and lakes. It’s a nation of keen recyclers, hikers, and general sustainability thinkers. This also reflects on the tourism of the country. The biggest tourism problem in Sweden is transportation. In proportion to the landmass, the Swedish population is low which results in big gaps in civilization. Generally, the UN sustainable development goals guide Swedish policy, that is why the current govt goal is that Sweden will be the first fossil-free country by 2045. ( Tourism policies and programs) This applies even more challenges to the transportation issue. These circumstances make the rural tourism development challenging In order for branding, four profile areas have been identified: innovation, creativity, society, and sustainability. These are the categories in which Sweden excels. Because of this, the nation consistently ranks among the top countries in the world in terms of economic performance, social commitments, innovative ability, governance, and sustainable commitments. As previously said, sustainability is an important component of Swedish culture, especially tourism. On visitsweden.com, we can find several USPs such as eco-friendly hotels in the forests, hotels constructed of ice, and distinctive Swedish residences such as the Swedish royal castle, Fika, the delightful custom of enjoying a coffee and a treat with friends, is not just a coffee break. It is much more than that. The habit is so ingrained in Swedish culture that some firms include a clause in contracts indicating that employees are entitled to fika breaks. (VisitSweden) They are also encouraging day hikes from train to trail, which is not accessible in many nations owing to geographic constraints and location. Therefore, it is noticeable that the common goal is inviting tourists to experience the typical Swedish lifestyle. Product Development: Process, Strategy, and Action Tillväxtverket, Sweden's Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, is in charge of national tourist development. Tillväxtverket creates, executes, and supports knowledge-based projects to boost tourist development, entrepreneurship, and the competitiveness of SMEs. The Swedish tourism strategy aims to make Sweden a highly appealing tourist destination with competitive long-term tourism, contributing to long-term growth and increasing employment throughout the country. To attain these objectives, a common strategy must be implemented, as well as efficient cross-sectoral coordination of initiatives by government agencies that do not specialize in tourism but whose operations are critical to tourist development, or vice versa. The SPP (Sustainable Product Program) initiative aims to encourage product development in seven tourism sites with the goal of developing sustainable environment and/or culture-based tourism offerings. (Tourism policies and programs ) The initiative aids a limited group of mostly small and micro tourist firms, fostering innovation in sustainable tourism and establishing practical means for it to be applied, both by individual companies and within locations. The objective is to create a long-term plan that will last until 2030 and will encourage sustainable tourism growth while also providing a platform for implementing activities that will address both national and global concerns.
The task entailed more and more demand planning, strategic coordination, and risk assessments. It also addresses the demands of tourism-related businesses in current support systems. The progress so far: Tourism operators are actively involved in the green transformation. The tourist sector is distinguished by sustainable and creative goods; The business climate is favourable; and there is interest in establishing, operating, and growing diverse tourism-related enterprises in urban and rural settings. Strategic collaborations between tourism actors are formed in order to attract long-term meetings and events. Sweden engages in long-term, systematic cooperation with relevant international actors to promote the development of sustainable tourism globally. (Signs of Progress) Key Learnings & Critical Commentary Some of the similarities and differences between Sweden and Canada at the moment: Both Sweden and Canada are dealing with geographic constraints which are limiting the growth in rural and remote regions. The two countries are also involving small businesses and destination marketing organizations in their development strategies to attract more visitors. Both countries are also offering a whole new cultural experience for international tourists. National and international cooperation contribute to the stability and new sustainable opportunities for the tourism industry. Both countries have strengthened their position on innovative, digital, and technological solutions for tourism. While Canada is trying to use more sustainable ways, Sweden is already leading on innovation in sustainable tourism. In Sweden, many areas, towns, government agencies, businesses, and organizations are already actively developing policies and roadmaps for improved tourist sustainability. The 2030 Agenda is an integral aspect of tourism-related efforts in many towns and regions. Several quality assurances and monitoring activities are underway around the country. Furthermore, various certifications and labels are available to encourage tourists toward more sustainable options while also indirectly encouraging firms and destinations to enhance their products and services in a sustainable direction. The tourist business may also help visitors feel more connected and responsible in a variety of ways.
