1 ATTACK ON CLIMATE CHANGE The Science of Climate Change Dorri Chin University of North Florida HSC 4210: Environmental Health Dr. K.L. Clark September 10, 2023
2 ATTACK ON CLIMATE CHANGE The Earth is getting hot. Climate change is the long-term shifts in weather patterns across the world fueled by humans burning fossil fuels. Climate change is real, and everyone is getting affected daily; for example, the artic sea is disappearing, summer comes faster and lasts longer, animals are trying to move to cooler conditions, and there’s been more droughts and wildfires than ever. Greenhouse gases from human activities shift Earth’s energy balance and therefore its climate. Humans also affect climate by changing the nature of the land surfaces (ex. Deforestation) and due to these pollutants that affect the amount and type of particles in the atmosphere scientists have determined that, when all human activities taken into consideration, Earth’s climate balance has been pushed towards warming, with the biggest contributor being increases in carbon dioxide . Even though more than 97% of scientist believe in global warming, people still believe the misinformation being put out call a very real problem “fake news”. Well- known researchers were against the scientific consensus. At least one prominent skeptic, the physicist Richard Muller, changed his mind after conducting research on historical data with temperatures as part of the Berkely project. His team’s findings essentially confirmed the results, and he came away with firmly being convinced that human activities were warming the planet. ‘“Call me a converted skeptic,” he wrote in an Op-Ed for the Times in 2012.’ Climate change is the most important environmental issue we (as the world) face because it affects not only social but environmental determinants of health. Some of these include clean air, safe drinking water, food, and safe housing/shelters. With these poor health determinants, many people can and have been dying from malnutrition, heat exhaustion, malaria, and diarrhea.
