Clouds In this webquest, you will review the factors involved in the formation of different types of clouds, as well as the type of weather associated with each. The following website may be used, but you are not limited to it: https://www.weather.gov/jetstream/formation https://scied.ucar.edu/learning-zone/clouds/cloud-types http://www.weatherwizkids.com/weather-clouds.htm Topic 1: How do clouds form? 1. What are the two main ingredients required in the appearance of a cloud? Condensation nuclei and water vapor 2. List the roots of the words used to name the cloud types and their meanings below: Stratus(ST)-autmosphere is stable and little change in next few hours 3. Describe how a cloud forms. Be sure to mention: warm air, water vapor, condensation nuclei, condensation, and the change in temperature of the air. There is water in all the air and near the ground it is in the form of a gas called water vapor. Warm water rises to then expand and cool. Warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air. The water vapor condenses into water droplets when it has particles and these particles are what are called congestion nuclei. Clouds could also form in different ways like for example the cirrus, cumulus, stratus, and nimbus clouds. Topic 2: The Core 4 As you match the cloud labels to the correct pictures, give a brief description and sketch of each type of cloud below: Cloud Type Description Low/Middle/High Sketch Cirrus Separated clouds that are white and have a wispy feather like look that is made up of ice crystals. High Cumulus Detached clouds that have a cauliflower shape with outlines that develop vertically. Low Stratus Usually a gray cloud layer which if dense enough can produce drizzle. Low
Nimbus Usually formed dark gray clouds dense enough to block out the sun and produce light to moderate rain. Low Complete the following: 4. Clouds formed in the high altitudes, above 20,000 meters are named using the prefix cirro . 5. Clouds formed in the middle altitudes, between _ 6,500 and 20,000 meters are named using the prefix alto . 6. Clouds formed in the low altitudes, below 6,500 meters are named
stratus and cumulus . 7. Clouds with precipitation falling are named using latin prefix nimbo or nimbus . 8. What type of human activity leads to the formation of contrails? 9. Cirrus clouds are the most common of the high clouds. They are composed of ice and are thin , clouds blown in high winds into long streamers. 10. Stratus clouds are uniform grayish clouds that often cover the entire sky. They resemble fog that doesn't reach the ground. Light mist or drizzle sometimes falls out of these clouds . 11. Cumulus clouds are white , puffy clouds that look like pieces of floating cotton . Cumulus clouds are often called " fair weather clouds ". The base of each cloud is flat and the top of each cloud has rounded towers. Topic 3: What can I learn from observing each type of cloud? https://www.thoughtco.com/types-of- clouds-recognize-in-the-sky-4025569 Cloud Type Type of weather is this cloud associated? Cirrus Sunny days(fair weather) Cirrostratus Usually come 12-24 before rain or snow storm Cirrocumulus Seen usually in winter or when its cold but fair Altostratus Form ahead of a warm or occluded front Altocumulus Signal for a thunderstorm later in the day and may also see them ahead of cold fronts Cumulonimbus Are thunderstorm clouds which is an indication of nearby severe weather Stratocumulus seen mostly on cloudy days and are formed when there's a weak convection in the atmosphere
