Part II: Write a lab report using scientific method sections below: Title: The Effect of Human Development on Groundwater Sustainability
Purpose
o
In 2-3 sentences
, state the purpose of the Groundwater Sustainability Lab.
Introduction
o
In a detailed paragraph
, summarize what is currently known about the impact of human development on groundwater sustainability. Use the background information provided in Unit 2 Lab: Groundwater Sustainability.
Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome
o
In one sentence
, state what you expect the results of the lab procedure will be.
Methods
o
In a detailed paragraph
, summarize the steps you performed to collect the data in this
lab exercise. The goal of the methods section is to include enough information that others can duplicate your process and obtain the same results.
Results/Outcome
o
In a detailed paragraph
, summarize your data.
Discussion/Analysis
o
In a detailed paragraph
, discuss whether you obtained the expected results and what you learned from the lab.
Part II
Purpose
The purpose of Groundwater Sustainability lab is to help you to better understand the purpose of groundwater. It also teaches the importance of how it impacts industrialization and how deforestation has affected the levels of groundwater over the years.
Introduction
The increase of population and urbanization has contributed to groundwater depletion as it leads to increased water demand. The Earth’s surface has more than 70% water. Of this only 1% on Earth is deemed accessible and usable. As mentioned, groundwater resources are being depleted at an alarming rate due to unsustainable human activities such as over-extraction for agriculture, industry,
and domestic use. When groundwater is extracted faster than it can be replenished by natural hydrological cycles, the aquifers become depleted and considered non-renewable. This means that once the water is extracted, it cannot be replaced by a reasonable time limit.
Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome
If a current human development practice continues without significant changes, it is highly likely that the sustainability of groundwater resources will be severely affected by anthropogenic activities
such as urban and industrial development and agriculture practices.
Method
I observe the impact of human development on various aspects of how they use groundwater.
I monitor how critical the impact could be between humans and the environment.
I identify potential areas of concern or improvement to be able to monitor the groundwater level.
I identify areas where groundwater depletion is occurring at an unsustainable rate.
I identify where interventions are needed to ensure long-term sustainability for groundwater.
Results/Outcome
The result that I get from this lab is that it depends on the amount of groundwater in the past 200 years has decreased by 90%. Along with deforestation, causing less transpiration of groundwater, we can see an increased need for reform if we are to sustain these resources. We are taking steps to lessen the impact of resources use, by decreasing industrialization by 10 to 15 %. I also think that consumption needs to be slow. However, action needs to be taken in the future to ensure groundwater sustainability.
Discussion/Analysis
Well, first, I gained a lot of information from this lab about groundwater. I learned that you could see a correlation between increased human development and decreased groundwater. I learned that in the 90 % decrease of groundwater and forest was a massive growth in the 20
th
century. I think the
scientists will continue looking for better ways to analyze the groundwater to make it more sustainable.
