Mineral deposit
: This mining company is specifically focusing on neovolcanic rock since it tends to be high in rare earth metals. Rare earth metals are critical as catalysts for industrial chemical reactions,
as part of high powered magnets, and as part of many important metal alloys.
Environment
: This location is near the Mediterranean sea and is home to rare chaparral biome. While the nearest town is only 3 miles from the mine site, it is quite rural. The largest nearby city is Naples, which is 60 miles away. The region around the mine site is fairly rural and has a significant amount of natural park land.
What type of mining is best in this situation? Why?
Open-Pit, because there is an open pit, and the ores are extended horizontally and vertically
What environmental concerns do you have about this
mining method?
Its proximity to the sea could cause issues
What health concerns do you have for workers on your jobsite?
It could be dangerous (uranium), and the faults could
cause issues
What health concerns do you have for residents of nearby communities?
There could be debris that reaches them as they are close.

Mineral deposit
: This mining company is specifically focusing on coal - that’s the black strip (Seam VI) in the diagram below.
Environment
: Tropical broadleaf forest. Surrounded by small villages, and 1 km from a large slum. During the rainy season, local streams swell to rivers. Most local residents get their water from groundwater.
Diagram below shows a cross section of earth. The vertical bars are sites of test holes that were dug to help determine coal seam depth and earth composition. The yellow layer with black dots represents the Upper Dupi Tila sands aquifer: a very sandy layer frequently saturated with freshwater. The light purple layer with black dots represents the Lower Dupi Tila sands aquifer: this layer is porous rock filled with freshwater year round.
What type of mining is best in this situation? Why?
Strip mining because there is a big strip of coal by sand. And it is easier to navigate water
What environmental concerns do you have about this
mining method?
The debris will likely get into the river and the aquifer
What health concerns do you have for workers on your jobsite?
Debris and conditions
What health concerns do you have for residents of nearby communities?
Since they mostly get their water from ground water it
is likely their water will get contaminated

Site 3 Author - Location
: Yukon River Basin, Alaska
Mineral deposit
: Gold
Environment
: Very mountainous terrain with a mature boreal forest (taiga). Mountains are green during a short summer, and snow-covered during a long winter. As the snow melts, it flows into valleys. Deep valleys contain fast-moving freshwater streams that feed into the Yukon River and eventually flow out into the Bering Sea. Towns and cities are extremely spread out. What type of mining is best in this situation? Why?
Placer, they are trying to find gold in the rivers
What environmental concerns do you have about this
mining method?
I think that this method won’t cause much harm
What health concerns do you have for workers on your jobsite?
Conditions, like the weather
What health concerns do you have for residents of nearby communities?
I think that they won’t be effected Put a big blue “Done” in this box when you’re ready for me to check it!!

Site 4
Author - Location
: Arizona, close to the Grand Canyon
Mineral deposit
: Uranium
Environment
: High plateau, rocky terrain with a temperate desert biome. Very little surface water is present, but residents get their freshwater from groundwater wells or from water diverted and piped
in from the Colorado River. Surrounding human settlements include tourist towns, government land, and Native American reservations.
What type of mining is best in this situation? Why?
Mountaintop removal because the deposit is in a mountain. (no mountaintop removal because uranium could be reactive, subsurface is better)
What environmental concerns do you have about this
mining method?
Water contamination and air pollution
What health concerns do you have for workers on your jobsite?
Uranium causing cancer, water filling hole
What health concerns do you have for residents of nearby communities?
The groundwater they drink will likely be altered
