Information Preparation of the Battlefield
Intelligence preparation of the battlefield (IPB) is the systematic process of analyzing the mission variables of enemy, terrain, weather, and civil considerations in an area of interest to determine their effect on operations (ATP 2-01.3). IPB results in intelligence products that are used during the military decision making process (MDMP),
to assist in developing friendly courses of action (COAs) and decision points for the commander. IPB is effective when all staff members provide input, all domains are accounted for, facilitates the commander’s ability to visualize, and supports the commander in supporting the intelligence effort. The IPB process contains the following
four steps, define the operating environment (OE), describe environmental effects on operations, evaluate the threat, and determine COAs.
Define the operational environment is step one of the IPB processes. Intelligence staff must identify those significant characteristics related to the mission variables of the enemy, terrain and weather, and civil considerations that are relevant to
the mission. Staff will understand other factors such as culture, languages, tribal affiliations, and operational and mission variables can be equally important. Describe environmental effects on operations is step two in the IPB process. Intelligence staff describes how significant characteristics affect friendly operations. The evaluation focuses on the general capabilities of each force until the development of threat COAs in step four of IPB and friendly COAs later in the MDMP. Evaluate the threat is step three in the IPB process. Intelligence staff will evaluate the threat to understand how a threat can affect friendly operations. The intelligence staff
relies heavily on the threat evaluation conducted by higher headquarters and other intelligence agencies. Determine threat courses of action is the fourth step of the IPB process. Intelligence staff identifies and develops possible threat COAs that can affect accomplishing the friendly mission. Staff will identify threat COAs to minimize the potential of a surprise to the commander by an unanticipated threat action.
Step one of IPB 2-7 Cav identified a multitude of areas that are built-up urban areas and areas of impassable overgrown terrain. The Modified combined obstacle overlay (MCOO) defines areas that will deter or slow the friendly forces during the offense and key bridge structures the enemy can use to slow progress. 2-7 CAV developed the threat overlay to assist in locating the type and disposition of the four enemy assets in GHOST area of operation. 2-7 CAV intelligence officer developed key terrain estimates that will allow us to set up assembly areas with strategic vantage points with long-range visibility. Step two of IPB 2-7 CAV determined there will be higher than normal temperatures requiring a higher need for class I supplies. Visibility in the region will be difficult at times due to the region's dust storms. The intelligence officer depicted civil considerations to have 14 industrial zones and nine residential zones throughout the area of operation. Step three of IPB has descriptions of the enemy in composition, disposition, and strength. The 801-sniper platoon is comprised of 33 personnel currently posed south of objective KIOWA. The 801 2 section, 1 PLT is comprised of a 7-personnel team posed east of objective KIOWA with multiple anti-
armor assets. The high-value targets in the 2-7 CAV area of operations are the BMP-2 and the anti-armor assets. Step four of the IPB process 2-7 CAV determined that the most likely course of action by the enemy is Operational Strategic Command- South's
(OCS-S) attacks with 80 DTG followed by an exploitation force in order to advance along ATR1 seizing HACHZI, SIRVAKI and TRAMAZ provinces towards BAKU. 80 DTG
will accomplish this by waging conventional and unconventional warfare within Atropia utilizing the BFB and Special Purpose Forces (SPF).
