Discussion Board: 40 Maps that Explain the Middle East
The majority of this geographical area is comprised of the Arabian Peninsula and North
Africa, including over 3,500,000 square miles and exhibiting significant cultural diversity
(Middle East: Land, n.d.). The spatial arrangement of ethnic groups in the Middle East is
indicative of the diverse cultural landscape of the region. The region under consideration
encompasses a diverse array of ethnic groups, primarily tracing their ancestry back to prominent
ethnic communities such as Jews, Turks, Arabs, and Iranians ("Middle East: People," n.d.). Map
14, titled "The Ethnic Groups of the Middle East," is a visual depiction of the diverse ethnic
composition found within the Middle Eastern region. Afghanistan is home to a diverse range of
ethnic groups, with as many as fourteen officially recognized groups. Among them, the Pashtuns
constitute a significant portion, with over 40% of the country's population.
The Middle East has a notable degree of cultural diversity, as noted by Fisher and Max
(2015). The Middle East is widely regarded as a region characterized by cultural diversity, often
referred to as a cultural melting pot, and is believed to have played a significant role in the
development of human civilization. The geographical proximity of this location to both Europe
and Africa is a contributing factor in this matter. The majority of maps depicting the region,
including Map, conspicuously display this information. The diversity observed in the Middle
East can also be attributed to historical conquests. The historical events of King Xerxes' invasion
of Europe in 480 BC and the establishment of the Caliphate by Mohammed in the 7th century
enabled these empires to disseminate their own cultures and also incorporate aspects of the
conquered territories upon their return to their respective homelands (National Geographic
Society, 2018). This statement elucidates the dissemination of Islam from the contemporary
region of Turkey to Africa, Asia, and Europe throughout the period of the Ottoman Empire's
governance spanning from 1300 to 1800. Additionally, it addresses the propagation of Judaism
and Christianity across Europe and the Middle East (Fisher, Max, 2015). Map 7 provides a visual
representation of the extensive diversity present in the Middle East, as it depicts the several
nations that exerted control over different parts of the region in the year 1914.
Due to the historical origins of numerous global religions in the Middle East, the region
encompasses a diverse array of religious traditions. The Levant region is home to a diverse array
of over ten unique religious practices. The Levant region comprises Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine,
Syria, and Israel, and is home to adherents of Christianity, Judaism, and several Islamic sects
(Fisher, Max, 2015). Iran encompasses a diverse religious landscape, accommodating both Sunni
and Shia communities. Surprisingly, the country is also home to a notable minority of Persian
Jews.
The Middle East has political diversity, characterized by the presence of diverse
governing organizations that represent the individual states within the region. Saudi Arabia and
Qatar are characterized by conventional monarchies, whereas Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, and
Yemen are characterized by parliamentary republics. The aforementioned political conceptions
exhibit viability within this particular locale and are bolstered by cultural and religious
convictions.
