Reflection: Personal Finance Basics
This week’s topic has been a very interesting and special subject that many people
overlook. I learned about personal finance coincides with financial literacy which has an overall understanding of setting one self-up for success by planning for the future. When it comes to saving for the future, it should be interpreted as saving for your future. Getting a head start on your future by saving money is the first step to having something to fall back on in case an unexpected turn of events happens. After reviewing all the articles that we were given as homework thus far in the course, I must say that it has made me feel gratified. This feeling has made me realize that I am progressing in the right direction for the future goals I have set in place for myself. I believe one lesson I took so far from the articles given about financial literacy and personal finances is the fact of having a saving account. My savings account has a good amount of money in it from moving my money around as well as me managing my spending habits more methodically. All of this is necessary because persistence, in the long run, leads to success with cash development. Since I started at GCU and this online class, I have learned an abundance of skills I will utilize throughout my education at Grand Canyon University. However, even though I have been
learning new skills they have also helped me identify my weaknesses and where I need to improve. First, on this topic alone, it made me very curious about stock investment and how a beginner can get into it. I have purchased a book that discusses different stocks for different outcomes as well as understanding the science that goes behind stock investing. Second, Microsoft Excel or any Microsoft application has been a struggle for me so far in this course. However, thankfully with Grand Canyon University and the resources they have available, I have those resources at my fingertips. I want to learn Microsoft Excel because I want to utilize 2
this application as a personal finance tracker. This will allow me to write out my overall income and spot-check my deductions by ensuring that the correct payments for bills are being made. Considering my program of study and potential salary/pay, the impact will have a good outcome for me. As of right now while being in the service, I feel I make enough to survive where I am not in debt, but I am also not rich. However, a service member who is married with dependents makes way more money than a person who is single without dependents. This reasoning is because once you have dependents your BAH or “Basic Housing Allowance” doubles while a single Soldier gets paid less. Another example is when a married Soldier gets deployed, they receive Family Separation Allowance while a single Soldier does not receive any because he does not have a wife/husband with kids. After reviewing all this information, I can tell that my yearly salary is good, but it could be better. After reviewing a chart specified by the Army for a Staff Sergeant Basic Pay Table for 2023, it specifies that I am a Staff Sergeant with over years of service and my yearly salary would be $42,584.40 per year (Military Ranks 2023). Some might say that is not terrible but to me, I feel like I could make more and do more by showing my worth to a company that cares about its employees. The potential salary/pay that I would receive for financial security will look better because I will be able to save more money and treat myself more often without worrying. After graduating from Grand Canyon University with a Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security and
Emergency Management I would like to apply for a chance to become a Pennsylvania State Trooper. I have already discussed my motives of why I would like to become an officer, however, I would like to point out that being an officer as has its perks when it comes to prospering in finances. A Pennsylvania State Trooper who graduates from the academy and goes straight into their line of work will start out making $89,000 per year (State Trooper 2023). 3

However, this total estimate can vary over time when an officer shows potential and promotions come into play. If you compare my military yearly salary with my potential future job salary, you
can see that there is a big difference between the two. This future job will allow me to treat myself and my family but also invest money to grow my future for the better. This long-run effect will be beneficial to my financial security because it allows me to know that I need to keep
going and stay focused on making money grow. 4

Worksheet A–Short-Term and Long-Term Goals
Everyone wants to make good decisions-decisions that maximize benefits and minimize costs. However, it can be
hard to make good decisions when you aren't sure what you want to achieve. That's why setting goals and creating
and following a financial plan with your goals in mind is so important. When you know where you want to be in the
future, it is often easier to get there.
Most of the day-to-day decisions you make are only single parts of the larger problem of getting what you want from
life. Suppose you spend $20 to see a movie and go out for pizza with your friends. Your decision was made to achieve a
short-term goal of immediate enjoyment. Remember, however, that whenever you make a choice, you also make a
trade-off. The $20 you spent for pizza and a movie can't be spent or saved for something else. All of your decisions are
related to each other, and so are your goals. The $20 you spent for entertainment helped you…

Stephanie Carter has been gifted a sum of $50,000 by her grandparents on completing her graduation successfully. She is a fresh finance graduate and is excited to invest some money in the capital market, for which she intends to use the gifted sum of $50,000. However, instead of committing this money to the market immediately, she decides to wait for some time, work in the field and acquire some experience before proceeding with her intended investment. She thus contemplates an extremely conservative investment in a portfolio of stocks and bonds, at the start of year 5 from now. For now, she will leave the $50,000 in a fixed deposit with the bank which promises an interest rate of 6% per annum.
She will require a return of at least 9% on her stock investments and 4% on bond investments. Stephanie would have to pay 25% taxes…

Question from Business Math Course:
