For this paper will be analyzing two lesson plans that cover reading comprehension. Both
of my lesson plans are social studies based with one for primary grade levels ( K-2) and the other
for intermediate grade levels (3-5). After studying these lesson plans, I will redesign one and
share the changes that I have made.
Primary Social Studies-Holiday Traditions
For my first lesson plan, I chose a Social Studies lesson on Holiday Traditions. This lesson is
designed for first grade students and is about 45 minutes long. Students will be comparing and
contrasting holiday traditions from around the world. This lesson plan activates prior knowledge
by brainstorming traditions for Christmas in America as well as other parts of the world using a
bubble map. Students will write about their family traditions and draw an illustration to show the
class. There were no vocabulary words, which would have been very beneficial for English
language learners as well as some of the tier 3 students. These students may not celebrate
Christmas or any holiday of the sort so they may be unfamiliar with the terms.
Pre reading, during reading, and post reading activities included, discussing holiday
traditions that the students are familiar with as well as their own family holiday traditions. For
the reading activity students were asked to compare and contrast their holiday traditions with the
holiday traditions of their elbow partner. Post reading activity includes using a Venn diagram to
compare and contrast holiday traditions on the board. There are some text to self relations
because most people have some sort of tradition that they do for the Christmas holiday.
This lesson can be modified by allowing students to work in groups or individually in order to
complete their assignments. In order to accommodate all students, the teacher will allow
additional time for those who need and an early finishers’ packets for those advanced students.
There was no use of technology in this lesson.
Intermediate Lesson- Edison and Bell
My second lesson plan is also a social studies lesson. This lesson is appropriate for grades 3-5th
grade and takes about 90 minutes. Students will be able to describe how technology changed at
the turn of the 20th century. By the end of the lesson, SWBAT explain what Thomas Edison and
Alexander Graham Bell invented, and how these inventions changed the way people live
d
This lesson does a good job of activating prior knowledge because the lesson is about
how technology has changed and some of the greatest inventions which we still use today. The
lesson goes over academic language because while they are viewing the powerpoint they have
some key terms to look for. Pre-Reading, Reading, and Post-Reading activities were highlighted
in this lesson. Students were given a starter to discuss and had to share out their discussions.
Guided practice allowed the students to do a gallery walk of the inventions that Edison and Bell

created, which will help the with their post reading activity, which is filling out a graphic
organizer about each inventor and their most prolific inventions. There was lots of technology
used in this lesson, the teacher used a powerpoint presentation as well as videos on each inventor.
This lesson incorporates writing to build literacy connections by requiring the students to write a
report to turn in for an exam. Students will come up with their own inventions that will make life
easier for humans. This lesson does allow for modifications and differentiation. Students can do
graphic organizer on their own or if they are struggling complete it with the teacher.
Redesign of Primary Level Lesson
Holiday Traditions
This new lesson plan will incorporate activities to guide students in learning about
holiday traditions. The teacher will pull out academic vocabulary for tier 3 students, one term in
particular would be tradition. The teacher will define tradition as a belief handed down from one
generation to the next generation. The teacher will also incorporate technology by showing
videos about different holiday traditions all around the world, such as food that is eaten during
this time, clothing that is worn and etc.
