Week 1 Building a Vision
January 16, 2024
When asked to define shared vision in education the first answer I would have given is it is a goal that is created by stakeholders to improve the learning process and achieve student success. However, after doing some research and watching the video “School and Community Relations” by Nadia Cruz, my thought on the definition has changed. In the video she shows the calculation of school + teachers + family + community = happy and successful children. When all of these people are combined and have a shared vision they are able to create a better climate for students. They are also able to create a learning environment that teaches students how to become productive citizens of their community. Epstein’s Overlapping Spheres of Influence also
support this calculation. He states that there are three major contexts in which students learn and grow. In his model, school, family and community form 3 overlapping circles and in the center of the circle is where the children are located. This is another example of how collaboration of everyone involved can influence a child and give them the guidance needed to achieve success. This is best achieved when a vision whether it is big or small, is shared by all stakeholders and they work together to achieve the final goal. School District has an educational philosophy that describes the student body that it serves as a diverse and multi-lingual that has many challenges when meeting the needs of their students. It acknowledges the challenges of public education and providing an equitable experience for all students. The following mission statement addresses the type of students we want to help our families raise: “Our mission is to instill in our students a sense of pride through excellence, enabling them to be good citizens, contributing members of society and to successfully compete in a global economy.” We further go on to acknowledge what are
governing values and philosophic beliefs are. In our list of philosophic beliefs, we list responsibilities of staff, parents and students. Sharing of these values and beliefs allows all parties involved, including community members and organizations, the opportunity to see what we are attempting to achieve and they can access for themselves how they can help. When developing these values and beliefs, meetings are held that incorporate the opinions of many stakeholders so everyone feels involved in our mission. These are the first steps to creating a shared vision and promoting collaboration, community engagement and overall success for all. School District also produces goals and priorities of the district. The same concept used to create the values and beliefs are used for creating the goals and priorities. Adults from all aspects of the school and community are assembled to create goals for both the district and the students. Within those goals are key priorities that can help achieve them. These too are also published for all to see and assess how they can assist with achieving the goals. This again is the first steps to creating a shared vision which leads to the overall success of not only are students and district but also our community. While the definition of a shared vision can be explained in many ways, the end result is everyone working together to create goals and then achieve them so there is success for all.
