1 The Crisis of the Homeless In Dallas Texas Wade Henderson Your Degree Program, DeVry University ENGL135 Advanced Composition Lorettea Davis January 22, 2024
2 The Crisis of the Homeless in Dallas Texas Homelessness dates back to the early 1600 and is still a problem in today’s society. We can see the effects it leaves on our once beautiful cities. The underpasses resemble dump yards, they are covered with tents, trash, mattresses, and bodies that lie there in raggedy clothes. The eye sore is ignored and people are left it frigid weather to wither away. The community needs to take further action and support our members. SAMHSA. (2016, January 21). Homelessness Programs and Resources | SAMHSA - Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration . Samhsa.gov. https://www.samhsa.gov/homelessness-programs-resources The cost of living in Dallas Texas has increased dramatically over several years. The cost of living is unsubstantial for many people, which is why they have no other choice but to remain homeless. Programs have been developed to support the homeless population in Dallas but have not been successful in keeping them housed. We need to reevaluate the efforts that have been made and really question why the efforts that are being made are not working. The SAMHS department has put together a variety of programs to support homeless people in this area. These programs range from substance abuse treatment, transportation, housing and disability. This is great resource if the homeless are able to gain access to internet services to access the help offered. Here are some of the challenges and opportunities facing Dallas’s response to homelessness . (2022, December 21). 3 Dallas has spent the last several years trying to clean up the encampments in downtown, despite the efforts the camps are just relocating to different areas of the town. They are moving to bench in front of stores or other underpasses. It is especially frustrating to citizens that are paying taxes to clean up the city and they are watching failed efforts to clean up the city. They are leaving drugs and needles that are hazardous to citizens that can encounter them. The homeless need increased effort to provide sustainable housing and counseling to help with substance abuse and proper shelter. Dallas R.E.A.L. Time Rapid Rehousing City of Dallas . (n.d.). City of Dallas: Office of Homeless Solutions. Retrieved January 23, 2024, from https://dallashomelesssolutions.com/our-initiatives/dallas-r-e-a-l-time-rapid- rehousing/ Dallas R.E.A.L has created a program that will help people who have gone a time period unable to make there rent payment and will pay the fees for one year allowing them to regroup and gain control. This is a huge way to prevent homelessness in the future and allows people a moment to get back on there feet. This is something that should be considered, for many people and needs to be advertised as a way to help. If I would not have researched this I would know nothing about the program. 4 The health and human services commission has several programs that can support the homeless. They provide many resources to low-income households. This includes homeless people. Snap is a food program that provides free food for them to purchase, Medicaid gives them access to health care and they have a transportation system that can get them to place they may need to go. The city and individuals need to reach out to the homeless and make them aware that these programs exists are there to help them. The health and human services commission should bring packets for them to fill out and return to help them gain access to these resources. The State of Homelessness in 2022. (2022, June 9). United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. https://unitedwaydallas.org/updates/the-state-of-homelessness-in-2022/ Covid-19 has a huge impact on the cost of living for many people and became a huge contributing factor in the increase of homeless people over the last 3 years. Covid caused many people to foreclose on their homes and stop working for several weeks without pay. There needs to a plan in place in case another Pandemic effects the Unites states. We need more options for people that can’t work to be able to pay mortgages, rent or other utilities. This was not in control and unfortunately caused many people to loosen the lives they worked hard to have. We have seen programs be developed to help bring money into the economy, but it did not bring in much help to combat the homeless crisis that was increased when covid happed.
