Mini Project 2 (MP2) – OCE 4525 Coastal Structure

Plagiarism is a serious offense which in the scope of college could lead to expulsion, and in industry could lead to dismissal. In my own words, plagiarism is the act of using someone else’s work and portraying it as your own. This means that no credit is given to the original author and you’re acting as if all the ideas, numbers, calculations, etc. you’re using are from your own work. According to the “Procedures for a Successor Professional Engineering Adopting as Their Own the Work of Another Engineer,” there are a few steps that must be taken to ensure an engineer is properly giving credit to a prior engineer’s work before they can safely use that work. Firstly, all work being used, including calculations, site visits, research, etc., must be documented and able to be yielded if necessary. A general rule of thumb is to document and give credit to everything used. Also, if completing permitted work, the successor
engineer must remove the title block, seal, and signature of the former engineer and use their own (61G15027.001 Procedures). The successor engineer is also required to inform the predecessor that they will be using their work by official letter or another form of verifiable communication. Should the proper steps to giving credit to a former engineers work not be taken, an engineer may face a variety of consequences. Firstly, the successor engineer’s reputation will be damaged harshly which could lead to repercussions in finding a future job or could affect their position in their current job. There could also be a possibility of losing funding
toward the project in which plagiarized work was being used. In one of the worst-case scenarios, the successor engineer could face legal consequences relating to copyright infringement (George). Ethics in engineering is important to ensure another engineer’s work isn’t being used and portrayed as someone else’s. I believe it is okay to use another engineer’s work if correct and official credit is given. This allows for engineers to get more work done without having to redo someone else’s work. The phrase “reinventing the wheel” comes to mind when I think of the use of another engineer’s work. If a survey or calculation has already been completed relating to a project you’re working on, it would just be a waste of time to redo
that work. By getting permission and giving credit to an engineer who has already completed the work, it allows for more new work to be completed in a shorter amount of time. This could lead to groundbreaking discoveries or for work to just be completed more efficiently.
