Magazine Spread Text Layout
In considering the optimal approach for designing the text layouts for my magazine spread this week, I deliberately selected "Music Talks With Children" by Thomas Tapper. As I delved into the narrative, I found myself captivated by the innocent faith often referenced by people. In summary, the mentor in the story conveyed to the child that diligent study, learning, and kindness towards others would illuminate her countenance. The child earnestly heeded this advice and diligently followed the instructions. Despite her unwavering efforts, she could not perceive the promised light on her face when she looked in the mirror. Her sincere belief in the literal interpretation of the master's words is invaluable. Disheartened by the absence of visible results, she confided in the master, expressing her diligence and her earnest attempts to act benevolently, yet the anticipated light remained elusive. The master listened attentively and endeavored to convey that as she spoke to him in that very moment, her face was aglow with light because every word she uttered emanated from her heart. He further elaborated on his point,
and their dialogue continued. It is this narrative that inspired my approach to designing these two
text spreads.
After carefully considering various design elements, I made the deliberate choice to maintain a simplistic approach, mirroring the childlike faith (but at the same time professional) and innocence that resonates with all of us. While I could have integrated an image and characteristic
background of music, decorative fonts, I believed that simplicity, akin to the faith depicted in the
story, would serve as a fitting tribute. I implemented typographic principles such as kerning and justification across each spread, and selected font that I find to be highly impactful. These fonts are not only easily legible for the audience, but also lend an air of sophistication to the layout
without detracting from the narrative. In the initial and subsequent spreads, I opted for Futura Bold and Hoefler Text Black Italic as the chosen fonts. Futura is a well-known geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Paul Renner in the late 1920s. It is known for its clean, modern look and has been widely used in various design applications, including branding, advertising, and print media. Futura's distinctive characteristics include its even stroke weight, geometric shapes, and minimal decorative elements, making it a popular choice for conveying a sense of modernity and simplicity in typography. Hoefler & Co. is a renowned type of foundry known for creating high-quality typefaces. One of their most famous typefaces is "Hoefler Text," which is a classic serif typeface designed by Jonathan Hoefler. It is known for its elegance and readability and has been widely used in print and digital
media. Overall, Hoefler & Co. is highly respected in the typography and design community for producing expertly crafted typefaces that are favored by designers, publishers, and brands. When choosing colors, I wanted a light background color for each spread and then I thought that by incorporating an old tone, black color in the titles and headings, subheadings, it would really allow even more of a childlike feel to each design. Elements of design that I used in
this project include cream and black colors, negative space, shapes, hierarchy, and contrast. By using each of these elements, I believe that I was able to create a nice, clean layout that effectively reflects the story without being too over-the-top or busy.
