Tabitha Persaud Assignment 2 – 6005 Content Area 6 th Grade Book: The Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle This short story has been successfully used in the past as a read aloud unit for our school’s 6 th graders. This text not only allows for a variety of strategies for the teacher, such as, author’s purpose, plot, setting, vocabulary: it also is interesting and makes the kids want to read. Objective: I will predict and make inferences about what will happen next in the story by the clues the text gives me. TEKS: 6.5 Reading / Comprehension of Literary Text / Drama. Students understand, make inferences, and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of drama and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Collaborative Read Aloud: For the collaborative read aloud, students will be put into groups of four. Each group will be based off resource grouping with ELLs strategically placed with students that are higher level readers. Each group will read with each other and assigned to read as; Narrator, Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, or Helen. This will ensure no one is being left out of the reading portion. The students will be encouraged to read with appropriate inflection and emotion. As the students are reading, they will focus on the clues being given and predict what will happen next. As the end of the story nears, these predictions will become more about which character they believe is the culprit and how the murder was committed. At the end of each section (strategic stopping point) the students will write on 3 sticky notes: A clue they think is useful. A clue they think is a diversion. A question they would ask if they were the detective. These sticky notes will be placed on the corresponding anchor charts at the front of the room. These will be so we can go back and check our predictions.
Day two, students will be placed in ability groups to discuss their predictions and clues. These groups will be based on each students’ strengths and weaknesses that have been assessed prior through previous observations. I am looking for good discussions on why they believe one clue is better than the other. They should be using text evidence to back their reasonings. I will then assign each group a clue and they have 10 minutes to write a persuasive argument as to why that particular clue is important. Fishbowl Method for Presenting Responses Student desks are already grouped in fours, each group will stand and try to persuade the rest of the class as to why their clue is one of the most important clues to solve the case. They should use text evidence from the story to support their answer. The students that are observing will take notes on each clue and will be encouraged to ask follow-up questions for each group. Strategic Grouping Synthesis Resource grouping allows the teacher to place students according to their needs and wants so that they can grow from their peers. These students should have a consistent set of group members so that they all are comfortable with each other and not afraid to make mistakes. Each should have a similar learning background so that they can grow together as well. Book Club – I really like the idea of doing an in-class book club. These groups will be no more than 6 students and they will be allowed to choose from a list of books I provide. This will allow me to have some control over the level of text they choose but they have the choice of genre. Due dates for certain number of chapters will be given out and they will have a collaborative worksheet to have completed by said date.
