Steps
Teacher Guide – Unit Plan Instructions and Information
Step 1: Standards
Science standards: The student will investigate and understand that the planets have characteristics and a specific place in the solar system. Key ideas include: a) planets rotate on their axes and revolve around the sun; b) planets have characteristics and a specific order in the solar system;
c) the sizes of the sun and planets can be compared to one another.
English Standards: 4.9 The student will demonstrate comprehension of information resources to create a research product.
a)
Construct questions about a topic.
b)
Collect and organize information from multiple resources. 4.5 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts,
literary nonfiction texts, and poetry. k)
Use reading strategies throughout the reading process to monitor comprehension.
Step 2: Text Set (3-5 books)

Step 6: Learning Logs
A daily learning log will be completed by students in their independent writing journals. They will answer the following questions:
●
“What did I do that was successful today?”
●
“What is something new I learned today?”
●
“What is something that challenged me today?”
●
“What can I do next time I face similar challenges?”
These questions help students become self aware of their wins and struggles while also giving me a gauge of what they understood. I will check journals after every class and make notes on what needs to be revisited the next day if there are comprehension issues. Step 7: Differentiation
●
This lesson is visual as we will be visiting NASA’s website with high quality photos of the planets and the Storybots planet rap
has
great graphics
●
This lesson will be kinesthetic as students will be able to “build” their own model of the Solar System using styrofoam, trifold board, paint, and glue
●
This lesson is auditory as Storybots planet rap is an educational song about the planets ●
For my students with IEPs, extra time will be given to them based upon their accommodations listed.
●
For my students who are ELLs, they will be paired with partners who display strong reading comprehension skills ●
I will be available for my planning and lunch for students who need extra help or do not understand. Step 8: Projects
●
Students will complete a fun project of the solar system in clas; students will be paired up based upon literacy levels by myself. They will be required to put the planets in the correct order from the Sun using styrofoam, a trifold board, paint, glue and any other materials for creative liberties. Step 9: Assessment
A formative assessment will be completed at the end of the unit covering all the material we learned. A study guide will be given to students the week of the exam. Every day after a book is read or a chapter is completed, we will have a whole group discussion on what students learned or found interesting. This discussion coupled with the learning logs will give me a snapshot into what students are comprehending and what requires additional time!
