Hello all, The article that I chose was written by an educator, non-profit consultant and a freelance writer. The author brings into perspective the idea that corporate social responsibility has gone political, she uses the examples of the recent trend of the larger mainstream companies aligning themselves with social issues around them. In (Walker, `2018) the author refers to the alignment of corporations with the #METOO movement, LGBTQ rights, gun control and harassment, as just a few of the social issues backed by organizations in 2018. She also defines corporate social responsibility, evolution occurring with it and why she thinks one should care. The correlation I found between this units reading, and this article was the CSR topic but also the “How is it evolving” reading on page 2, in this units reading page 85 it talks about evolution as well. Paragraph 5 describes the birthing of the concept of corporate social responsibility with the more focus put onto issues like the environment, energy, worker protection and conservation. As in the reading, the article talks about the political and social environment playing into CSR, and we have all turned on the news and seen the political environment and how it carried over into an organization. Starbucks most recently came into the news when it followed its Corporate Social Responsibility and dismissed several employees for discrimination and then Dicks Sporting Goods with the ban of black assault style weapons (this move is pushing Dicks to the brink of bankruptcy). Looking at the social issues at play today, when stated in (Walker, `2018), she really hit the nail on the head when she explained why CSR is important. CSR was explained as important because it is no longer possible to hide poor ethics behind big organizations (Walker, `2018), those big companies/organizations feel much more pressure from society around them with the insertion of social media sites and that enables news to travel even faster than days of past. In the last paragraph “Why should you care” the author cites a study that brings forth statistics that show over 90 percentile of business students have stated that they would willingly forgo a portion of a future salary in order to work for a responsible employer. I can see this with, a recent event in Disney World with a visitor who had been previously confronted by park personnel for wearing a political t- shirt, the patron decided to do a poster board and take it on a roller coaster. Long story short, the customer was banned from Disney for life. The Disney organization decided to draw a line in the sand, they did not do it necessarily based off what it was (political propaganda) but rather societal views of that matter. I will close with a question, call it an analysis if you will, do you think that CSR plays a much larger role today because of the diverse workforce that exist in a modern world?
