Name: Ryan Evans ECE 102: Individual Project Grand Challenges for Engineering Which Grand Challenge for Engineering is your Team studying? _Restore and improve urban infrastructure_ Getting Started Source #1: NEA Website: www.engineeringchallenges.org Go to the NEA website. Locate and read /scan your team’s challenge profile and answer the questions below. 1. Briefly define the TOPIC of your challenge. How to cost effectively, and quickly restore and improve urban infrastructure. 2 . Describe at least two CURRENT BARRIERS or CHALLENGES. The U.S. is currently more partisan, and polarized than ever before. That leads to Infrastructure being a more partisan and political idea than it should be. Following the political infrastructure debate, infrastructure is becoming controversial because of what it can be defined as, some think it should include more environmentally conservative, while some think it should focus on roads and bridges. Digging Deeper for Background Research Source #2 Database Searched : Gale ebooks Use the instructions provided in the ECE102 LibGuide video to locate at least one best fit article on the challenge’s topic. Read the article and answer the questions below. 1. Record search words, filters and strategies used in this database: Infrastructure, Design, American, 2. Describe at least two findings that explain the BACKGROUND on what HAS BEEN DONE already in this topic. A renewed interest in Americas crumbling infrastructure, and how it has been ignored and neglected for long periods of time. political atmosphere, trying to be used to stimulate the economy after the covid pandemic. There also have been some strides to improve infrastructure already from various investments around the country, such as private and public investments. The grade of America’s infrastructure in 2005 was a D, in 2013 it did improve to a D+. 3. Citation Copy this article’s APA citation and paste it below. Read the article and answer the questions below. 1. Record search words, filters and strategies you used in this database to locate and select your chosen article. Infrastructure, America, Urban 2. Explain at least three findings that describe the: a) CURRENT STATE The current state of America’s Infrastructure is dire, given a D+ rating from engineers. The economy depends on good infrastructure, and our infrastructure is deplenishing fast. The current infrastructure could take as much as 4 trillion off of the GDP if not addressed fast. b) what STILL NEEDS to be done. Massive public and private investment needs to be infused into the infrastructure close to 2 trillion. An expansion of new industries included in infrastructure, such as electric charging station to further our leap into the future. A focus on repairing roads, and improving public transportation to become safer, eco friendly, and more accessible. 3. Citation Copy this article’s APA citation and paste it below. It also requires seeking input from a variety of known and unknown stakeholders and being alert for unintended consequences. Often this information isn’t explicitly stated in the research and engineers must use critical thinking skills to identify these needs. Based on what you now know through this research about your Grand Challenge in Engineering’s topic, respond to the following questions. Your responses should be 3-5 complete sentences. a) How does society benefit by a solution(s) to this challenge? Every aspect of society would benefit from solutions to this challenge. More roads means more accessibility to places we couldn’t have gone before, and better roads at that. The improvement of public transportation means that citizens can have more opportunity than before. Everyone from the poor to the rich benefit from Infrastructure that is safe and modern. The national security issue is present as well, an old outdated grid is vulnerable to attacks, while a modern grid is safer. b) What are some possible unintended consequences for a solution to the challenge? A large unintended consequence is inflation rising rapidly. Already this last year and a half Trillions have been spent to lift the U.S. out of a horrible economic disaster, and as a result, inflation is the highest its been in nearly 40 years. Another consequence could be to much focus on infrastructure. If we build roads to no where that helps no one and uses money that could be better repurposed. c) What populations might be affected? In terms of inflation, every population would be affected, but the lower, and poorer families are more affect by inflation. It’s nickname is the silent tax, because you make the same amount of money, but the prices around you go up dramatically. Money also comes into play because it is going to cost a lot of tax dollars to make this right, and currently the country is broke. We are 22 trillion in debt so it might be time to look at cutting some of the budget majorly.
