Snow – Week 2 Portfolio – EDUC 5470 As you may have found, searching the web is a time-consuming and rather inefficient chore: even when using quality search engines, you may have to sift through dozens of irrelevant “hits” to find the information you want. In no more than 1-page, critically reflect on your search process. Interpret the success and challenges you faced when finding sources for your research study. Was it difficult to find scholarly resources on your topic? What are some hints or tips you would have for your peers in conducting a search for sources via the internet?  This assignment will be assessed by your instructor using the   Portfolio Activity Rubric . Scouring the world wide web for reliable information, that is topic-specific, can be a tedious and time-consuming task. Utilizing a regular search on the Google search engine brought up thousands of resources to sift through. Out of those, there are a handful that I might be able to use but most were not reliable or written as opinion with no factual support. The resources that I did find, if they were surveys or research papers, would only allow me to view the abstract for free and would require payments – sometimes as high as hundreds of dollars – to gain access to a PDF version of the paper that could be downloaded. Unfortunately, I just don’t have those kinds of personal or expendable resources available to me. Given my difficulty with Google, I then chose to move to a school-supported resource, JSTOR. In my experience, JSTOR has the most reliable and thorough list of all scholarly resources available. Making this move proved to be the most beneficial when trying to find such topic-specific material. I was able to find far more than a handful of research papers, reviews, and other helpful studies regarding the importance of student-teacher relationships. As I feared, there are a few from the 1950s through the 1990s, and then there is a slight gap in the research until 2010 and beyond. This is not to say that other research doesn’t exist, but those studies weren’t exactly what I needed. Part of me feels like the best research that can be done is through a research-specific search engine, like JSTOR, to best weed out the useless or irrelevant information. The other part
Snow – Week 2 Portfolio – EDUC 5470 of me, though, feels as if the Google search did some small bit of good because I was able to feel the pulse of the interwebs. Despite very few scholarly results coming up, when compared to JSTOR, I do feel like many other relevant articles came up about the positive and/or negative outcomes for students when it comes to student-teacher relationships. It is my belief that this topic is growing in popularity and desire for results, so my search now will most likely change in the next few years. In the end, I do feel confident with my supporting literature pieces and how they all fit together within my annotated bibliography. I feel as though my search results reflect the current state of affairs on the topic, and prove that more research needs to be done.
