Summary 1 Engineering Ethics Case 1
Cheyenne is in her second year of working at Wanihikan Minerals. Accompanying her on her visit to the Waupos First Nation Community, which resides near a proposed chromite mine site, is Reilly Coyote, Director of Environment and Sustainability. Before ore production can begin, an all-weather road needs to be built. However, there existed pressure within the company regarding the road. The company favoured the shorter and costly route as it will take less than a year to reach the site. Subsequently, Reilly and Cheyenne needed to ensure that this route was chosen by the chiefs. Resultantly, during the Elders Meeting, when the chiefs identified important areas that should be avoided, Reilly failed to inform them that two specific territories conflicted with the favoured route of the company. In closing, Reilly informed the chiefs that the road will certainly avoid the aforementioned areas. Cheyenne was concerned and conflicted by Reilly’s dishonesty.

Engineering Ethics Case 2
Marie was raised in a technology-focused household where both parents worked in STEM fields. Subsequently, she attended the University of Southern Alberta for mechanical engineering. In her Interdisciplinary Design Class, Marie was assigned the challenge of designing a Mars rover for Colin Harvey. After meeting with her design team, Marie was appointed the project leader as taking initiative was in her second nature. In keeping with her role, the first client meeting was scheduled. At the meeting, Mr. Harvey referred to Marie as a secretary. Despite being shocked and angered by this, Marie remained silent but internally, she was conflicted. She hoped that one of her teammates would correct the discriminatory comment and validate her role as group-assigned leader. However, when this did not happen, thoughts of contacting an Equity Officer, speaking to someone at the Registrar’s or First Year Office or simply ignoring the comment arose. Word Count: 147
