Perry’s Hunting Magazine 2 Hunting Magazines Magazines play an important role in human’s lives, focusing on certain trends and issues. They provide information on a plethora of topics and target various audiences for advertisement. Perry’s hunting magazine will focus on providing tips and tricks to successful hunting, whether it be whitetail, turkey, elk, or many more! This magazine will advertise multiple hunting locations, guided hunting, and hunting gear. When restoring my old family photo that would be used on the cover of my magazine, I used several Photoshop tools. First, I cropped the original photo, and went on to adjust the brightness, contrast, exposure and vibrance. Once I liked the adjustments, I added the filter “cooling filter (80).” I found and provided a background photo of a field with a hunting blind and added my family photo to it by using the place embedded option under the file menu. I changed the opacity of the background and added all my texts. My final addition to the magazine cover was the whitetail buck skull where I used the object selection tool and was able to select just the skull, and then copied and pasted it onto the cover. Images have many different file types that they can be saved as. Images fall under two categories which are raster, and vector file images. “JPEG, GIF, and PNG all fall under raster files, and display static images where every pixel, has a defined color, position and proportion based on their resolution” (Duo, 2021). Since raster files are static it is not beneficial to use this type of file when resizing a picture, if done, it will create a blurry distorted photo. SVG, EPS, AI, and PDF fall under the vector image file. According to Duo 2021, “vector graphics use a system of lines and curves on a two-dimensional plane, scaled in comparison to the total area, not any single pixel.” One benefit of using a vector file would be to enlarge an image and continue to enlarge it if needed without the image being distorted in any form. Vector files are digital and created by a computer using a mathematical formula whereas raster files are made up of tiny pixels, making them rely on resolution to create great photos. Photoshop has many different layering options when editing a file, smart objects allow an individual to perform steps and edits that will not destruct the photo and can be revisited or undone. Photoshop uses layers in the software to be able to edit files by composing multiple files into one and adding shapes and texts to the original. Using multiple layers is beneficial due to layers not permanently effecting the original file, and you are able to delete them if not liked, and revisit them when needed. Photoshop allows you to hide, link and change the settings and order of layers throughout your file. When hiding a layer, it allows you to see the image before the layer was added, and then again once you un-hide it to see what changes were made. You are also able to move the layers around, for example if you want text on top of an embedded picture, you will drag the layer above the embedded picture. Photoshop offers use of layers when editing a picture, to ensure you don’t do permanent editing to the original file. One way to edit a file in Photoshop is to enhance the file, common adjustments can be made to the sharpness, contrast, brightness, and resolution of the file. I tend to use these adjustments quite a bit, just to touch up the file a little. One layer is the hue and saturation adjustment and is used when wanting to alter the intensity and brightness (Paterson, 2017). Photoshop provides different image processing capabilities, they are feathering, filtering, and burning. Feathering is the process in which you “soften” the edges of a photo. Using the feathered edge brush can help to blend pictures. Filtering pictures is just as it says, Photoshop provides individual algorithms per filter that allows you to add that filter to the original file, altering the appearance. Photoshop offers advanced methods of selection such as masks, channels, refine edge, and defringing. Masks and layer masks allow you to hide or show that part of the layer, channels are a standard photoshop console supplying color information to the user. Depending on what mode you have chosen it will show four to five different color channel consoles automatically. Refine edge allows you select an area when masking a background. This would be used on “hard to select” areas, such as hair, that would make it difficult. “ When you replace parts of an anti- aliased image with selections from a different image, you get unwanted fringing that's comprised of stray pixels, and looks like a fuzzy halo around certain parts of the image. Photoshop comes with a defringe tool that enables you to remove the fringe from your images” (King, 2017). Photoshop provides individuals with so many capabilities and tools to restore and edit images. Photoshop allows you to crop, filter, adjust multiple settings with brightness, contrast, and resolution. You can enhance and manipulate old photos, and just photos you want to alter. When altering the brightness and contrast an individual would use the menu bar, select image, adjustments, and brightness/contrast. Doing so will bring up a box in which you will be able to adjust the slider to the desired look. Once completed click okay, and it will populate a new layer, ensuring the original photo is not permanently altered. Under the adjustments tab it provides all the other adjustments you can make to that picture. Photoshop provides so many ways to edit, create, enhance, and illustrate files. “ It is the most widely used software tool for photo editing, image manipulation, and retouching for numerous image and video file formats” (Smith, 2022).
