The textbook addresses the concept of theory-based research. The authors state that, in order to produce an outstanding research study, researchers must conduct a review of the literature and formulate a research problem that will test a theory. Sir Isaac Newton, the famous physicist and mathematician, stated, “If I have seen farther than others, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants.” Newton’s scientific discoveries were based
on the prior works of eminent men such as Galileo and Copernicus.
What do you think is meant by a gap in the literature, and how can Newton’s words guide you in finding a gap in the literature?
The Bible reminds us in Colossians 2:8 (NIV) not to let deceptive philosophy or theories take us captive. Do you think this verse apply to us as Christians when conducting theory-based research?
As researchers, our goal is to explore the scientific world. We investigate the possibilities of new
ideas and analyze the information that we have available to us. A gap in literature is a missing portion of research that was conducted is subjective and cause to interpretation (Baako et al., 2022). This gap can occur anywhere in the research, whether in the informational literature the researcher is using or the data the researcher has gathered. This gap may not be the fault of the researcher, but could be that the information has not yet been obtained and requires further research by others. As a beginning researcher, we may not see the gaps or understand there could be missing information in the studies we are using to gather our data for foundational information. Sir Isaac Newton is an inspiration to beginning researchers. In his statement above he remains humble in the fact that he stood on others shoulders to see where he was going and gained knowledge from their research to supplement and enhance his own. His words encourage other to see that although there may be gaps in the literature from the past, it is up to us as new researchers to fill those gaps for future generations. It encourages those that work with us and those who come after us to continue to explore the science behind things and always ask the hard
questions of what if and how. As a person of faith and a researcher, there is never an end to the gap in literature. We will never know everything there is to know about a subject and it is in us as human beings to find those answers. Weber and Weber (2021) note the past philosophers Saint Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, respectively said that wherever the truth is found it belongs to the Lord and all truth is god’s truth. Romans 12:2 tells us that we should not be conformed to this world and must be transformed by renewing our mind and that in testing it, we discern what is the will of God and in doing so, what is good, acceptable and perfect (Christian Arts, 2019). In doing research and exploring the gaps, we are doing what we are put on this Earth to do, renew our minds with knowledge. However, we must be careful and not be swept up into bias and the chaos of what new discoveries can mean. As a person of faith, we should tread gently and read many sources to
verify our findings. We should come to the truths in our research, be able to back our findings and maintain our faith in oneself and in the Lord.
