Immigration and Ethnicity, Gender, and Religion and Meaning

·
Kothari worries in the essay whether she is "[her] parents' daughter." Why is this
of concern? How is that concern related to the title of her essay? At the end of the essay,
she says definitively: "I am my parents' daughter." How has she reached that conclusion
in the process of writing the essay?
○
Kothari is concerned if she is her parent's daughter because for Kothari her
parents represent her Indian culture and she was having trouble with her identity
embracing her Indian and American sides. At the conclusion of the essay, she
realizes that she can still represent a mix of the two cultures and be her “parents’
daughter”
●
·
Consider the ways food relates to cultural identity. How does Kothari characterize
American foods? In what ways does she enjoy them? In what ways does she find them
distasteful? For example, how is her husband-who is never named-described in terms of
his favorite foods? In what ways do husband and wife differ from each other? How does
Kothari suggest that their culinary differences could affect their relationship?
○
In a way, Kothari uses food as an analogy to compare and contrast Indian and
American cultures. She wanted to fit-in in America so she attempted to eat the
foods the kids around her and school ate such as tuna. She wasn’t completely
accustomed to it was strange to her. Similar to the Indian food she had when
visiting with her parents. She couldn’t stomach the food and wished to be like her
cousins. Similar to the food she doesn't quite fit into one category. She's afraid the
differences would affect her relationship with her husband thinking he would
favor someone with a familiar background and the same likings.
●
What does Lalami mean by the “gray zone”?
○
The gray zone is people who have Muslim beliefs or practice Islam but don’t
support isis or are willing to take part in radical actions.
●
·
What implicit connection is she making between the West and ISIS?
○
ISIS wants to create a divide between what they believe are “true” Muslims and
those of the West who are a mix of cultures, they want to inspire both groups to
hate each other
●
·
What does Cornejo mean when she says, “I learned that the price of my innocence was
the guilt of my parents”?
○
It means that as Cornejo got older she realized the sacrifices her parents had made
to try to give her the best opportunities possible. Her innocence being unaware of
the dangers of being undocumented came at the expense of her parent's burden of
potentially putting her in a difficult situation and fear of deportation.
●
·
Is her anger at the status of the undocumented understandable? She has a degree
from Harvard and is getting a Ph.D. from Yale. Is her anger justified?
○
I believe her anger is justified because she and her parents have proven that they
are upstanding citizens and after being in America so long she too looks at it as
her home
●
·
Compare and contrast Cornejo’s article on the American dream with Jischke,
especially regarding family.
○
Their stories are similar, both have relatives that migrated to America seeking
more possibilities. I think both essay's themes are of opportunity and that this
country should have opportunities for all to thrive and live out the American
dream

Discuss Cofer’s feelings about her family, especially her feelings of alienation.
She reflects on the cultural and generational gaps that separate her from her parents. Cofer
describes feeling like an outsider within her own family due to cultural and linguistic differences.
She struggles to fully embrace her Puerto Rican heritage while feeling disconnected from
mainstream American culture. Moments of love, connection, and understanding are also depicted
within her family. The portrayal showcases the complexity of familial relationships and the
challenges of reconciling multiple identities.
●
Discuss Cofer’s difficulties in assimilating to American society.
○
Cofer deals with the struggles of assimilating to American society. She faces
difficulties with the language barrier, trying to adapt to English as her second
language. Cofer also grapples with the clash of her Puerto Rican upbringing and
the cultural differences she encounters in America. She experiences stereotypes,
discrimination, and the pressure to conform to American societal norms. Trying to
balance her Puerto Rican heritage with the expectations of American society
poses challenges in defining her own identity. Cofer often feels like an outsider
within American society, feeling disconnected and excluded. She also worries
about losing her cultural roots while attempting to assimilate.
●
Raya is torn in many ways. Discuss briefly what tears her and why. What is her
conclusion?
○
Raya is torn after the culture shock of going to college and going from a majority
to a minority. She comes to the conclusion that people will call you names and
place labels on you but in the end you should embrace who you are and be true to
yourself
●
The passages by Solnit highlight the demeaning women get for their efforts. Women face
discrimination as well that limits the way they express themselves and that should be
addressed.
●
Tolentino was in a search for devotion and looking for enlightenment within herself
whether it was through religion or drugs.
●
I think the author is very self-aware to recognize the flaws of the church and their focus
being more corporate than spiritual.
●
Compare Tolentino’s search for meaning and self with Mairs’s search
○
Both Tolentino and Mairs show an acceptance in who they are and gives them the
power to try to look deeper into who they really are as a a person
