How does being a self advocate help those around you?
Being a self advocate for your community could quickly blossom change. Whether it's making
signs for what you believe in or even making a blog to share your opinion, in the end it all helps
make a change. Contribution to self advocacy through writing is another big thing, writers
express their opinions and ideas through their work while also taking us on a journey, when you
share the same opinions and views as the writer it can have a big effect on you, and for the
people who don't share the same views it can either help them better understand the author or
they go on their own and share their opinions about the writing, in many ways people don't
realize they are a self advocate but just by reading a simple book and getting inspiration to do
better for your community of yourself makes you one. . All of these things relate to self Advocacy
and whether you're doing it from home, writing about it or voicing your opinion you can make a
real difference and help the people around you who are too scared or not ready to voice their
opinions.
First off Esperanza is a self advocate, she wrote a book called “How Behavioral Factors Are
Being Implemented Into Today's Financial Education Programs”. In this book she talks about
how she researched 50 financial programs in Florida to see how they are evolving to fit one's
needs. This book stems from self advocacy because she then goes into explain that she is doing
this is because she once had an issue with scholarships and not getting enough money through
college, Her research shows others that there are other ways and many scholarships that have
evolved and will fit your needs.”I contacted 50 agencies with 27 question survey regarding their
basic organizational structure, funding, program details, success determinants, primary
program goals and focus, 36% of those contacted or 18 organizations responded”. Most
organizations that were formed after the 2000 have a low budget of under 100,00 meaning most
of that money is being used very quickly and is not being disputed fairly. If these programs want
to continue serving the community fairly they should pay closer attention to the funding and
make sure that they really connect with everyone on a deeper level so they can meet your
education goals. Espereranza contacted the 50 organizations and while she did get a low turn
out on responses she was still able to accumulate enough data to come to this response which
not only shows how keeping up with your data helps but putting yourself out there, making calls
and emailing can get you to your conclusion and ultimately show you how to solve the issue.
Self Advocacy works in many ways, not only does it come from writers but it can play a role in
the community,
“Anyone can be a self-advocate and while speaking up for you or someone else
can make you feel empowered, independent and more in charge of decisions for your life, it is
not always an easy thing to learn how to do. It takes time and practice.Good self-advocates are
informed about the topic they are sharing with others”. To be a self advocate you have to be
patient and willing to do the research to answer the full question or to fully deal with the
problem, taking your time and drafting all of your research to make sense of it or even making
posters are all ways people in the community self advocate. ‘
Make sure policymakers know
where you stand when it’s time to make decisions. Write an email or call officials explaining why
you support an issue, making sure to ask them to do the same. Schedule a one-on-one meeting
to educate them on the issues that are important to you and learn more about how you can work
together toward a common goal”. Writing an official email that supports your issue gives you a
full idea of what you stand for and how you're going to fix it, it also gives the deciding person a
laid out plan to show them how you're going to go through with your plan. This also helps with
making sure you are clear and concise with the message, when you have it written in front of you
it is easier to catch any mistakes. “Self-advocacy can help you develop strong
problem-solving
and communication skills. The more you practice articulating your interests, the better you’ll be
at developing solutions and speaking up for yourself and others”. With being a self advocate you
have to be able to not only write about it but you have to be able to speak on it, which is why the
writing part is so important. Problem solving is another part of this, you need to always have a
draft of your issue or a list of research explaining what you're fighting for. In the end writers in
your community all use self advocacy to show you how to help in the community, they voice the
issues and make everything public so you are aware of what is going on at all times.
In Conclusion it is possible for anyone to be a self advocate, all it takes is being present in your
community and realizing that it takes time and a lot of effort to move forward with certain
issues. Esperanza showed self advocacy by taking an important issue she and her peers had to
deal with and turned it into a solution, and now because of her research she has volunteered
with many programs for scholarships to help raise more money, while also designing a program
to help people in need get hands on help to decide their future. Many people are a self advocate
without even realizing it, writing about your issues, making a plan and going through with it,
collecting data and compiling research for your issue are all ways of self advocacy and it is all
ways writing can help keep your community safe and yourself safe.
