Goal 1
There is a young student in my class who comes from Pakistan. She would always ask me what did you say to Ms. Gifty, “I do not understand your language” I explained to her that I am a Ghanaian and Ms. Gifty is also from Ghana. We speak Twi. She said, “I am from Pakistan, we speak Urdu. I asked her if she understood the language and she said yes, we speak it at home. She was so proud to tell me about her language, so I learned how to say good morning in Urdu and I would greet her and her mom when they would walk through the door. “Subah Bakhair” means “Good morning”. They always respond with a smile. The learning experience I have attained from this is that my student has family pride and can positively identify with her culture, when I greet her Good morning in Urdu.
Goal 2
One thing I have already used in the classroom is showing how neurodiversity is visible and can prompt the other children to be respectful in
the classroom. There is one child in the classroom who will walk around the classroom when everyone else is sitting or will be humming loudly when the other students are busy writing or drawing. This child is unaware of the sounds that he makes. I explained to the children that this student processes
things differently, yet he is still a part of this class and to treat him with respect just like they would treat their other friends with respect. The children at his table are very accommodating to him, that they have come to
terms with his humming, and it is ok for the student to hum and do his work. None of the children pick on him or complain when he is humming. They all stay focused and do their assignments.
Goal 3
Twice in a year we organize a food drive in the school. I use this opportunity to explain to the children that some people, due to no fault of theirs, do not have enough food to eat. Students are able to donate food items which are sent to the homeless shelter to help those who do not have enough food to eat.
Goal 4
One thing I would use in the future is when a child asks me a question and I do not have the answer, I would not pretend I know, but I will tell the child “That’s a really important question. I need to think about how we can talk about it, or “Let’s go talk to Ms. Renada who might be able to help us talk about your question.” From henceforth, I would respond to children’s questions and not ignore them. It is important to take time to do research and utilize community resources regarding issues to ensure the most accurate information.
