GRA 200 Design Effectiveness Worksheet

Quick Reference
For the purposes of this course, the elements and principles of design are those listed in the following tables. Create your quick reference by completing the tables, using your own words. The bracketed text indicates where you should insert your responses.
Elements of Design
Element
Explain: What is this element? How does it affect a design? What are some tips for using this element?
Line
A specific mark made to create or add to a design. Used to separate certain areas of a design. A tip for using this element is to adjust the thickness to get a certain desired result.
Shape
A design that is geometric with a specific outline. A shape can add different dimensions to a design. A tip for using this element is adding the drop shadow effect to help the illusion of depth. Color
Shade variation and tone of a design. Color affects the overall appearance of a design. A tip for using this element is choosing the same color scheme for all designs, especially if the designs are business related. Texture
The appearance and overall finish of the design. Texture can affect the look of a design to make it appear more attractive. Utilize texture to naturally draw attention to your designs.
Space
The empty area around the objects within a design. Space can help declutter a design. Try to have an equal amount of space so your design doesn’t appear crowded. Principles of Design
Principle
Explain: What is this principle? How does it affect a
design (refer to the Design Impacts column)? What
are some tips for using this principle?
Design Impacts
Hierarchy
This principle gives a sense of order to your design. You can use this principle to make a certain area of your design stick out. Emphasis
Balance
This principle allows for stabilization within your design. This can affect the evenness of the design. Use this principle to make your design cohesive. Symmetry
Rhythm and Repeating a pattern or smaller design throughout Movement
Principle
Explain: What is this principle? How does it affect a
design (refer to the Design Impacts column)? What
are some tips for using this principle?
Design Impacts
repetition your design. This principle adds flow to your design. Use this principle to make your design more appealing to look at.
Unity and variety
The combination of different areas of the design to make it into one whole. Gives the design a unified look which adds attention to the design. Cohesion and interest
Contrast
This principle is used to bring out certain areas of your design that are more important. It highlights an
important factor within the design.
Emphasis and interest
Proximity
This principle aids in cleaning up the design so it doesn’t appear cluttered. This makes the design more pleasant to look at. Cohesion
Scale The size of different objects in the design. Allows for certain objects in the design to appear larger than others. Use this to make more important objects in your design stand out. Emphasis

For all my designs, I decided to stick with using Adobe InDesign to create them. The first artifact that I created was for Adobe Illustrator. The elements that I used for this design were shape, color, and space. I used shape to add a second rectangle within the first rectangle to make a separate space for the
bullet points. I also used the hexagon shape as the bullet points for each note about the application. Color was used to differentiate different areas and text of my artifact. Space was used to break up the design, so it wasn’t too crowded. The second artifact I created was for Adobe Photoshop. I used the same elements as I did for the
Adobe Illustrator artifact. The third artifact I created was for Adobe InDesign and just like for the first two artifacts I used the shape, color, and space artifacts. For all three artifacts I utilized the drop shadow
effect under the shape element to provide depth to the designs. For color I made sure to match the colors of the applications to keep a color scheme.
The principles of design I the effectively used for all three artifacts were balance, rhythm and repetition, contrast, and proximity. Balance was used to create the look of a notecard with the second rectangle within the first rectangle. Rhythm and repetition were used to repeat the hexagon pattern for the bullet points in my artifacts. Contrast was used for the different color shade variations and to highlight the bullet points and application name. Proximity was used to space out the text in the design, so it did not appear cluttered.

While overlooking three artifacts there may have been a few elements and principles of design that were ineffectively used. The elements that I noticed were utilized for the designs were shape, color, and space. The principles of design that I believe were used in the designs were balance, rhythm and repetition, contrast, scale and proximity. The element that appears to have been ineffectively used in the artifacts is color. The principles of design that were used ineffectively were contrast and scale. With taking a deeper look into the artifacts, the color element was used a bit ineffectively. The background behind each artifact's text is a pastel shade but to help make that area pop I should have used a white shade for each design. Changing the second rectangle background to white draws attention
to the most important part of the design which is the text. Making this the same for all of the artifacts ties them together instead of making them seem like three completely different designs that aren’t related. A few principles of design appeared to be used ineffectively throughout the artifacts. These principles of design were contrast and scale. Scale was used a bit ineffectively because the bullet points that I used to highlight the information in my artifacts are too large which can be a distraction from the text. The contrast principle was used ineffectively due to the background color behind the text taking away from the text itself. Improved Design/After
