Reflective Essay
Part I
Educators must continually strive to provide nurturing environments and developmentally and linguistically appropriate instruction for all learners. The instruction should consider the characteristics of young English language learners and their language development, the learning conditions that are most effective for these learners, and the kinds of instruction that best meet their needs(
Coltrane, 2003). The information in the video is beneficial to me in many different ways. In the video, Taylor mentions that new Educators should try to get to know and familiarize themselves with the language. When I think of my classroom I would take into

consideration and embrace the student’s language. I will improve my skill set by getting more resources when it comes to other languages that aren’t normally seen to provide an environment that is comfortable for the child to learn in. I learned that depending on the learning age of the student there are different strategies for each. Some effective strategies that Taylor used in the video were visuals,
songs, and chants for vocabulary for the younger group. With the kindergartner's letters capital and lowercase sounds and lots of you know chants and stuff with that for the older group so second graders who
again have been speaking English for a while(Allen, 2014). One strategy that I’d adopt in my classroom is visuals because it seems to be very effective when learning English and you can put
up pictures around the classroom and have it in both English and another language to encourage the English language learner. I’d hang up pictures and also make sure the book area is filled with
different books with pictures and have a variety. When it comes to parents being involved in a student’s learning it can be very important and very beneficial to the student. Young learners with parents who are involved go home reading with their children who are doing the site words and doing the sounds. Those children grasp the language faster than those who are going home and doing nothing. When parents are involved it can help the student become more motivated with wanting to learn. Parental involvement supports student achievement in their education. Part II
Two additional strategies that I would use in the classroom would be focusing on literacy and vocabulary and differentiated instruction
. When teaching literacy and vocabulary within the classroom it's helpful when the words are grouped into three tiers
. When teaching differentiated
3
instruction gives the students multiple ways to learn instead of just one way. I’d use the literacy and vocabulary strategy by asking students to say or draw their definitions of the words in English or their home language to help them understand each word and its meaning. I’d use differentiated instruction within a classroom to teach by giving students more than one opportunity to learn which means giving student’s four different choices to deepen their understanding of the work.
A way I’d engage families is by keeping the families of these students informed on their child's progress and maintaining open communication. An example of how I will engage the families would be by giving them the information that is accessible to them in the language that is spoken at home so they will be able to understand how to help their child. Giving information helps engage the families and they can be able to foster the strategy at home. If I give vocabulary
cards to go home then it will be in both languages. Learners do not all progress at the same rate in acquiring English(Diaz- Rico, 2018).
