1 Classroom Strategies for English-Language Learners LeTysha L Davis Walden University EDUC-6737J-1 Strategies for Teaching English as a Second Language Dr. Peter Ross 2/25/2024 Classroom Strategies For English-Language Learners In the video, Taylor explains some very good key points when working with children who are English language learners within her classroom and the techniques she uses. From listening to the video you should make sure that you familiarize yourself with the language to be able to support the child's home language within a classroom setting. Educators keep the language simple and use actions and illustrations to reinforce oral statements. Ask for completion, not generation; Model correct usage and judiciously correct errors; and Use visual aids( Gray, & Fleischman, 2004). The key points that were mentioned above can be used to improve my work by making sure that I’m more culturally aware when it comes to
2 understanding one's identity. Cultural awareness is important because it allows us to see and respect other perspectives and to appreciate the inherent value of people who are different than we are(Wisner, 2023). When Taylor talked about collaboration she mentioned that students excel more than others because of parents who are involved with their child's learning. It is good when young children can have their parents involved with their learning and it helps because they are helping the children at home. Culture plays a role in parental involvement and different types of parenting styles (Lamborn, Mounts, Steignberg, & Donbusch, 1991). This may influence the degree to which parental involvement correlates with academic achievement. Parental involvement is generally known to have a positive correlation with academic success in language learning(Kim, & Barrett, 2019). The information provided in the video can assist in helping me improve my skill set is making sure that I get as much information when there is a new student so I can learn the background and be able to do my research on the culture to become more familarized. I realized after watching the video that when I did have a student who was an English language learner I did not look at the background of the child’s culture but I did not have support at the time from the place I worked so it was tough. I’d provide more opportunities for English language learners by making sure that the visuals provided can be in both the child’s home language and English. This would allow me to label everything around the classroom with visuals so it can help them learn the word. Color and culture make each one of us special and enable us to offer unique gifts and opportunities to the groups we are part of. At the same time, color and culture help children learn about each other and the world.
3 In short, color and culture enrich classrooms. To appreciate what each child can contribute to the class, teachers need to learn about each family’s cultural values. Helping children to see themselves in your pedagogy, curriculum, environment, and materials enables them (and their families) to feel welcomed and valued(KAISER, & RASMINSKY, 2019). The role that parents/guardians play in assisting the classroom is by helping their children at home. When educators send home certain items it can be in both languages or even books in which parents can then be able to work on letters or even learn about English in a book that can be read by their parent. Parent involvement helps students succeed within the school and in their later years. Children will have better language comprehension and by the parent being involved it will motivate their child.
